| Looking at Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50mm. Looks like everyone gets the zero stop but what is the preferred reticle? Will be mounted on a tactical bolt action .308 or .300 WM - ultimately shooting out to 1000 at steel, paper and the occasional lost varmint. Not a dedicated hunting rifle(s) but will see some use in the that area. No competition use. Just wanting some better glass than the Super Sniper which is on there now. So the NP and Mil Dot reticles basically - although the Horus is tempting but that's some higher coin. |

NP R1 or NP R2 are my favorites. For the 3.5-15x I would get an NP R1.
I have a 2.5-10x32 and a 3.5-15x50 both in NP R2 and wish the 3.5-15 was an NP R1. The 2.5-10x doesn't zoom in enough for 1 MOA has marks IMO, but the 15x one and higher do. Also the 2 MOA windage marks on the R1 vs. the 5 MOA on the R2 would be an improvement. I use my scopes on a 6.5grendel AR and a .308 bolt action generally from 150 out to and beyond 1000yd. I think the 3.5-15x50 will serve you well for what you describe. It's definitely enough glass for 1k and further. The Zerostop isn't necessary on a 3.5-15 or larger variant IMHO. There are lines that mark which revolution your turret is on. (not so on the 2.5-10x variants, but that's another story) Some people say it's necessary, I don't have it, nor would I give the extra money to have it on my scope. If you're more comfortable with Mils then get some form of Mil reticle with 1/10th mil turrets. I personally am more familiar with MOA so the NP R1 and R2 models are perfect. No nonsense, very practical and easy to use. Just don't mix and match MOA and Mils. You will notice a HUGE boost in clarity coming from the SS. I'll probably never buy another scope that's not atleast NF quality. Spoiled

NP-R1, I selected it based on the feedback of many long range shooters. Most everyone on the FCSA board chooses it as well. Apparently no one is going to disagree with you. That makes the answer pretty obvious. No argument here. I have the NP-R1 reticle in my 5.5-22X 50mm Nightforce. It's not my first Nightforce and I like it (the NP-R1 reticle) better than the hunting reticle that was on my first one. If you have a SS with the mildot setup, I would suggest you stay with mil/mil adjustments on your new scope. That way you will be able to use the same adjustment methodology with both scopes. If you're going to trade the SS, then stay with the NP-R1. I'll wager you know this, but I'll throw it out anyways, just keep the reticle and adjustment systems the same. MOA/MOA or mil/mil. With Nightforce, you'll happy either way |

Quite frankly, go with what you're comfortable with. You have the Mil-Dot in the Super Sniper because it's the only option in that scope - ya never said if you learned to use it or not. Regardless of if you choose to go with an MOA or Mil reticle, go with adjustments that match the reticle value, you'll be glad you did.
I can do Mils or MOA, but if I had to have a preference, I'd go with the NP-R1 myself. |
