FOR Me, I've never found a decent medium to long range scope in that price range.
But I'm very picky with my optics.  If it doesn't have high qualilty glass and internals it just doesn't interest me.

Lots of others are not as anal.  Take a browse on SWFA's website, see what appeals to you.  But Best choice is to look at them in person, go to any place that sells scopes.
touch, feel, look thru them see what might work, then search around for a good price.

i've had to buy optics on a budget before, it's most of the time I'm never happy with them.  Cheap scopes had poor optics, poor light gathering and poor internals.  If you can't see thur them and your adjustments don't track right
what did you save?

Best to keep saving till you can find a good peice of glass.  High quality scopes will last a life time.  Well accidents do happen, but if you take good care of hem they will last.

Way back when I bought my first ACOG, cost me $425 NIB; four digit serial number.

I purchased one scope, in the $500 +/- range; let's just call it brand X, first time shooting it less then 20 rounds and the internal level bubble broke free on a semi-auto .308...  Sent it back and it took like 6 months for them to replace it... That one came in a sealed box with the windage and elevation adjustments twisted / canted and totally F'ed up.  Nice quality control...  You couldn't even turn it one click.  Sent that back, 3 months later a new replacement came iin.  That stayed in the box / wrap and I took it and traded it off for a nice spoting scope.

Best value out there is the SWFA ss 3-9X42. I have two of them on semiauto 308s and would not trade them for anything that cost less than $1,200.00.

I vote for the SS 3-9 as well. It's a little more than your budget, but nothing anywhere near its price can touch it.

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 RapidZ 600 reticle.  Cameraland and SWFA have demo units for $470

The scope you are looking for is the Nikon 3-12x42 M223 w/BDC . You can see it here Nikon M-223. Another option would be the Leupold Mark AR 4-12x40 seen here Leupold Mark AR.

What caliber are you shooting with it? If going with the Rapid Z this would matter greatly because the reticles are calibrated for certain calibers. Such as the 600 is for the .223 and the 1000 is for .308. Just something to consider. If you have a semi this is the way to go as it makes your rifle super quick on various yard shots without having to dial for either elevation or wind. It's all right there in your reticle.
