| I recently acquired my first flattop upper and an Aimpoint Comp M4, and I have a (possibly dumb) question about where to mount the optic - Google is being unhelpful, or perhaps I don't know how to search for this specific issue. Could anyone explain to me (or point me to more reading) if it is better to mount the sight more to the front or more to the rear, or if it even matters? Thanks in advance. |

I think its mostly preference.
I prefer my RDS so the front lens mates up with my rear lens. So it looks like 1 circle instead of circle in circle like if I were to mount it closer to my eye. I do not want to see the inside side walls of the tube. It also gives me a good field of view inside the RDS. It usually ends up a couple slots behind the front of the flat top for me from the RDS I use and my position for cheekweld. |

As far forward as possible. Most keep it on the receiver as do I. However, I absolutely loved everything about mounting my ML3 with the cantilever mount at the VERY FRONT of the handgaurd, except for the front heaviness. I was dicking around and mounted it out there and other than the weight forward issue and the sloppiness/slow target transitions, I loved it.
But my brain kicked in and said, "Hey stupid, why do you think everyone keeps it on the receiver?"
