I'm seeing more and more A3 handles being cut down to where the rear sight is and being mounted, so optics can be attached.  Right now I have a Troy BUIS, but reconsidering because the A3 sight might be a better option.  Anyone out there using the cut down A3 handle method??

I use one, and I've cut down another 50 or so for other people too. Its easy as all get out, cut it with a band saw, sand it smooth and pretty on a belt sander, clean it, and paint it. I see NO disadvantages if done right. Slap your optic (red dot typically) in front and you are good to go. If you use something magnified, take it off and screw it on the bottom of your handguard and you have a great handstop. They return to zero pretty well in my experience, not perfect but close enough. The way I see it is if your optic takes a dump its sure as hell better than nothing. One note of caution, the steel plate thats used to clamp on the rail is HARD, very hard. Its easy to wreck a new bandsaw blade on it, so I typically cut it with a grinding wheel. Only other thing to mention is some people dislike the plate being able to flop around when moving around (not a big deal in my opinion) but I have drilled a hole in the plate (remember HARD) and installed a roll pin in the site itself to keep the plate oriented when sight is being moved.

I have never chopped one, but I do use the ready made type, and mount a red dot w/ riser in front of it.

Have chopped a few. Roto-zip will cut through one like butter. I then use a dremel with a barrel sander to smooth down.
