Is the 512 the best bang for the buck...know there is better...but for the average shooter with limited funds?

Wrong forum but I would say yes.  I just ordered a 516 for my latest painted Ar.  I also have a ML3 on my other one and have to say I like it more but it is more expensive.

I really like my Eotech 512. I would love to have a ACOG but I can buy three Eotechs for I ACOG right now. I just got another 512 LNIB for $300, hard to go wrong with a 512 for $300.

I have one on my M&P15T and love it, it's everything you need in an optic and nothing you don't. Using AA batteries makes it even better since you can buy those almost everywhere.

I liked the 512 I had.  Another inexpensive sight I enjoyed owning is the Millet DMS1-4 scope. It's got a true 1x setting, glass is decent.  Only downside is the reticle isn't bright enough to show up red in really bright sunlight, so you aim with a black donut.  Probably a more cost effective option than adding a magnifier down the road to the Eotech, although I had good experience with a LaRue Poboy magnifier for my eotech, but I don't think LaRue has it available now.  But if you don't see a need for magnification, definitely go with a 512, they are cheap and work great.

Great customer service at the factory too......should you ever need it.  I have a 512 on a 16" EBR I am currently using for three gun.  I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

I've been running a 512 on my Rock river for about 4 years now....the only problem was the mounting peice that grips the rail got knawed up after a few years so i just emailed L3 and they sent me a new one about 3 days later. Its affordable but not cheap holds its zero well and I like the 1 MOA dot and I actually have faster target aquisition with it than with any of my aimpoints.....I guess its just my eyes. With the 3x magnifier I have shot it out to 400 yards with very good results and would recommend that as an option aswell. good luck.

Depends on what you're wanting to do but yes the 512 is a very good optic.  I regret selling mine as it was a lot of fun to shoot with.

I am a huge fan of my 512.  If you don't see getting NOD's, grab one.

If you have zero expectations of getting a NVD in the future get the 512.
If you plan on getting a PVS14 or something then go with the 552.

I really like my 512 and you don't have to worry about chasing down special batteries to keep it going!

Hey NCHornet
Where did you find those 512 for $300 at?   I have only seen them for around $400. I am just looking in all the wrong places?

You have to be quick in the EE here.  I picked up a LNIB one with a 2010 build date and all the paperwork for $305.
