May be a silly question but just wondering how many years to expect out of an ACOG, not so much the tritium life but at what point, if any, does one expect an acog to be old enough that it would begin having issues with function.
not talking under military condition but the average joe taking it out a few times a month with the normal abuse it might see.

I'd imagine the optics and fiber optic element would last longer than you.

IIRC, the tritium life span is 10-15 years.

Under "average Joe" use as you put it, and not military rigors, it will probably outlast you.  The materials it's made of are the same one that your rifle (assuming it's an AR) are made out of, and other than the tritium, it will last just as long as your rifle.  Singlepoint scopes from the '70's which use a fiber optic element as well are still working fine, though on them, the tritium is past it's useful life.

its half life is about 12years

Damn you radioactivity and your stupid half life!!!

But thank you for setting me straight.

Yes, But they say 10-15 because it may be dim to some after 10 while still bright to others, but will likely be GONE at 15.....

The user manual says a useful life of 20, or something along those lines.

do they re-install tritium in them when they do become too dim?

I know they will with tritium viles in pistol NS but I wondered that about my acog (I have a TA33)

Yes, Trijicon will re-lamp but it will require a new fiber optic and prism assembly as well. It is around 450 bucks....still cheaper than a new ACOG and you can choose a new reticle color if you want

In 15 years I figure I'll be ready to use the new laser hologram sight projected above the barrel from a dime-sized housing.

To be serious, I thought about the life-span too and then realized that if I get 15 years out of it that will be money well spent.   Some tech-innovation will make it less desirable anyway by then anyway.  Sort of the way we look at ACOG, APs and EoTechs now.  Wouldn't really care if my Redfield Wide-field circa 1980 no longer worked today.

I have no reason to believe mine won't easily outlast me.  They're built like tanks.  The fiber-optic on top might get cracked or "crazed", but it won't affect the operation.

There was a recent photo on USMC.mil of a Marine who took a round through the base of his RCO, without it disabling the sight and he continued to shoot.

I have a trilux scope made in 70's, did not have tritium in it when I bought it (israli surplus), it is good to go.  The ACOG I understand is better, although I have never owned one.

If civilization is still around in 15 years, I will be surprised.  Heck, I will be happy if we make it to this same point next year!  Why?   US economic collapse, Global economic collapse, Gulf of mexico Chernobyl time bomb, Iran war, Korean war, American police state takeover ... just to name a few.

Your tritium going dim in 15 years is the LEAST of your worries!
