| The 553 is an excellent model but it's a bit pricey and it's heavy! If you know you're going to run a magnifier I would automatically start looking at something in the XPS line for a smaller foot print on your rails and for the weight savings! I run a 553 on my patrol rifle and love it! But my department does not allow for any magnification so I had little need for the space saving because all I run on my upper is my 553 and Troy folding rear sight. |

The 553 has a dual ARMS lever mount that takes up a lot of space on the receiver, with a rear BUIS there's no room for a magnifier unless you move the mount forward, so that it straddles between the receiver and the handguard (I wouldn't do it, but others have with no ill results apparently), or sits on the handguard entirely.
The XPS2 and the upcoming one with a built-in lever mount would be better for use with a magnifier, or one with the old thumb screw mount. |
