I don't know anything about optics, save what video games have taught me, so really nothing.

I'm looking for a scope with proper range finding markings that will work with 8mm Mauser as a cartridge.

If not that, then whatever is the next best thing.

Also, just for grins, are there any other scopes with a similar reticle as the PSO -1?

Leupold, I believe, will offer a bullet drop chart reticle for just about any load in existence, but it's a custom job on their scopes, and I'm sure it isn't a cheap option.  IIRC, you'll need to provide them with the drop at various ranges to ensure it's set up right.

For me, I prefer a mil-dot reticle and some proper ballistics software.  I just memorize the drop (or elevation adjustment) per distance for whatever load I'm running, and if I want to change load or even mount the scope on a different rifle, I'm not hosed.  The mil-dots make an excellent range-finding mechanism as well.

If you check out the custom shop website for Leupold a custom reticle isn't that expensive. If I remember correctly it isn't much more than a standard mildot. There was a guy who had a custom built 2x-7x or 1x-4x VX-1 with a custom BDC reticle matched to a load he specified the ballistics for. His cost for it was $260. To me that is really inexpensive when you consider you are getting a custom scope built to your specs.

Speaking of mil-dots, do they have to be calibrated to the round or will any scope work for any round?

Mildot isn't set to any round, it is used as a fixed reference to measure distance, but is also usefull for adjusting for wind without touching the turrets and can be used for bullet drop if you know it.
