Just how functional is an optic sitting on top of a carry handle?  How awkward is it to use?

I am exploring this as an option for my Colt 20" A2.  My eyes have trouble with irons.  So I need to either sell the rifle or find a suitable optic setup to put on it.

Seems to me that an optic sitting on top of the carry handle might be uncomfortably high.  Thoughts?

It's definitely do-able. I prefer it on top of a carry handle much more than one of those mounts the sets the optic in front of the carry handle.

Your cheek weld will not be identical because you'll have to peer above the handle so it's just something to get used to ... which doesn't take long at all.

Ya gotta love flat top ARs.

An Acog fits on very nicely, just slightly higher than a flat top.  It was designed for it.   Depending on your budget, that would be the way to go.

Another good option, is the Hakko scope.  They made the Colt contract scopes, and are excellent quality for the money.    For example- Not affiliated with the seller:  http://ee.ar15.com/ItemView.aspx?iid=17347

I think I paid around $100. for my Hakko at Cdnn.  Don't think they have any more.     Review:

I agree with this one.  What optic are you going to get?  IF you will be using a red dot such as the Aimpoint, I would go with ARMS #39 - it is THE BEST "goose neck" type mount out there BAR NONE.  It locks via a thumbnut under the carry handle and by a bolt on clamp that will hold onto the front of your carry handle.  Rock solid is an understatement.  The railed platform on this mount goes all the way to the rear of the FSB, so you can install a flash light at the front portion of the mount, close to the FSB.  Then mount your optic at the rear end, closer to the carry handle that will give you a co-witnessing ability in case your optic dies on you.

If you insist on having an optic on top of the carry handle, I'd suggest a Mini ACOG ($$$$).  More affordable solution is a Pride Fowler MRD with the A-2 mount (complete with the protective ear) or an Aimpoint T-1 or H-1 using ARMS #2 or the ARMS #39 (you can mount an optic on top of the carry handle, too with the ARMS #39).

I hope this helps somewhat.  Good luck and have fun.

Compact ACOGs live in the carry handle...
