I'm about to buy a S&W M&P 15.  What would be a good, relatively inexpensive scope to put on it?

Need more info... what range do you want to shoot at, etc

For what range?  What kind of shooting?  In general, I think the Nikon Pro Staff series is an excellent choice for the money.

NC star or Barska.

Or spend some coin and get quality.

And you might want to post this in the Optics forum.

Vortex seems to get good reviews and they have different lines at different price points. They have some new stuff that looks really impressive. Unconditional lifetime warranty.

I have a Nikon 2-7x32 on my carbine and a Nikon 6-18x40 on my rifle. The 2-7 works really well for a carbine. I haven't fired the 6-18 yet but thats on the agenda for tomorrow.
I played with the budget optics and found it to be a waste of money. The Nikon 2-7 was $129 at wally World. I had wasted twice that much on cheap scopes in the past...never again.

Get good with irons then move up to a Aimpoint.  You don't need magnification at those ranges and you can always add a magnifier later.

What is "inexpensive"?  Under $100?  If so, then there is only one scope I would even bother with... a Bushnell banner straight 4X, or maybe 1.5-4.5.

I'd suggest stepping up a notch to a Burris Timberline 2-7x ($150).  Acceptable glass and good magnification range.  Lifetime warranty, SUPER compact, and fairly tough.

Oh and BTW, a little trick.  Leupold rifleman see-under rings are the perfect height for mounting a scope on an AR.  They are cheap ($17) and tough enough.
