I am trying to decide between 2 models of a particular scope. One is a 4-12x and one is a 6-18x.

I am planning on taking this scope to shoot prairie dogs in the spring and hope to take some long shots ( 200-300 yds). HOWEVER, I definitely want to be able to take some closer shots around the farm... say 40-50yrds or so.

Is the 6x to much magnification for use at 40 or 50 yrds??  the other side of the coin..... would a 4-12x be adequate for 200-300 yard shots?

sidenote - both would have a mildot reticle

I like more magnification, down side will be your FOV @ 50 yards it may only be 10 feet or so.

300 is more medium range for a precision AR-15 IMO. A good 4x-12x would be fine for that distance, 4x is okay for 50 yard shots as long as you have time to set them up. I would not go with a 6x-18x scope unless it goes on a dedicated long range rifle.

Thank you VERY much for your input. I am kind of leaning towards getting the 4-12. That is helpful.
