im new to the ar15s and have a question for you eotecg guru's. i have a rra carbine with gg&g mad buis along w/ gg&g non floating rail. im pretty postive my rail is same height as my  reciever. my question is what eotech will work for me? i shoot under 50 yards and just play around shooting bottles paper clays etc. i have been looking at either the 512 or the 557.ar.223. i know gg&g has the 512 and qd mount for 415 shipped.  the 557 is gonna cost around 200 more. i dont see the big difference besides battery life. what do you guys recommend for the monies? thanks in advance and sorry for the long post!

For playing around why would you need the night vision 557?   Save your money and get the 512.  As far as being the right height on your rail, you can always add a spacer, but I'd be surprised if you need one.

ETA:  I'm not familiar with GG&G stuff, but looking at their web page it seems the rails are pretty much the same height as the receiver, as you stated.  I'd guess you'll be fine.

No need to apologize at all   We all learn by asking questions.

As long as you stick the AA battery models, I think they're all good.  Just depends on your other needs.  I wasn't aware of the "bullet drop compensator"  reticle in the 557.   I guess that could be pretty useful, but again it depends on how you plan to use the rifle and how much it's worth to you.

If you're shooting long range (200-300 yards or more as I define it) then you might find it worthwhile.  Depends on what you want.  For me it's not worth the extra $140 or so.   At those distances I'd use a traditional scope with magnification (3-9x or whatever), and those are offered with all kinds of reticles (usually with little or no extra charge), as you may know.

I would not mount an optic to a rail that was drop in. It can have some play in it and move around under recoil. Which could change your point of impact. And yes, the rail and receiver are same height. The 512 should suit your needs fine.

thanks guys. seems like 512 is the waay to go for my needs. i agrre that the bullet drop comensator is useless for my situation. if i was shooting long yardage id have something like  4x+.
