I have been loking into reddot sights and have a basic question. Since most have 1x magnificatiob what is the practical difference between an Eotech and an Aimpoint? I can see that Aimpoints look more like a short scope anf the Eotech looks more like a rweflex sight. Is that the main difference or am i missing something? I use rweddots on pistols for competition and have a C-More and several Leupold/Gilmores and UltraDot Matchdots, so I know how the reflex differs from a tube type sight.

What would my choices be for a reddot scope with 3x magnification? Is it limited to an ACOG?

you can get eotech or a aimpoint, and still have 3x mag... there is antoher tube that goes behind them and magnify it. THen you flip it to the side (it folds over) and its 0X mag. Then when you flip it back over, you will have the mag.

Ill post pics later.

first off...spell check man...spell check.

The practical difference is usability.  Battery life, ruggedness, size, weight.  Its a user preference question. both Aimpoints and EOtechs have 3x and 4x magnifiers that mount in front to magnify the scope.  Some of the mounts allow the magnifiers to flip out of the way to use the RDS in CQB ranges.

First, sorry about the spelling. Until I rearrange some furniture I am sitting sideways with my keyboard pulled halfway onto my lap. I'll try to do better.

Thanks for the answers- they make sense.

For what I will be doing- mostly target shooting and some hunting I might do better with a scope. I looked at the Trijicon Accupoint riflescopes. There are some with an amber triangle, 3x9x40.

Whatever I choose will be going on my new Les Baer "Police Special" flattop 16" AR15 carbine.

I don't want a long regular riflescope on it. If I had the money I might get an Acog, but I just bought the carbine and can't afford another 1k+ right now.

I want something other than a 1x reddot. I would really like not having a battery. If I do choose one with a battery I want a long life between changes. I like having fiberoptic illumination.
Size isn't a real issue, and it doesn't need to be super rugged. I am not a big fan of the reflex style sights.

I noticed in the pics of the Trijicon reticles that I can see an amber reticle much easier than I can see a red or green reticle. I am slightly colorblind.

It also seems to me that the triangle or chevron is much more precise than the other options.

What does all that do to my options?

The Trijicon Accupoint sounds like a good scope for your purposes. The offer the triangle reticule and a German cross hair with illuminated dot. Typically, the triangle is a little faster up close while the cross hair is more precise at distance.

It seems if you do go for a RDS you want an Aimpoint with a 3x magnifiers, 2moa dot.  You can save $$ by buying a Primary Arms system.

If non-battery is the way you are going a used trijicon, but magnification = $$$.

I would check the used optic section. seems you need to look at the $$ aspect first.

After buying the AR I will have about $800.00 to spend on optics.
I like the Trijicon ACOG, and if I could find one with 3.5x or 4x and an amber triangle or chevron I would probably jump on it.

What is the difference between the full size ACOG and the smaller one? Just size and weight? Jim

Size, weight, and magnification. The Mini ACOGs are only 1.5x or 2x depending on the model. They also don't have BDCs.
