Hi I have three rifles I need to outfit with optics...all ARs.
I have a 16 inch AR equipped with an ACOG TA31RCO 4X32. I like that set up for mid range shooting and I am very happy with it. The rifles that need scopes include: 24 inch 1x12 twist bull barrel Fulton Armory Varmint upper. Thinking : Super Sniper 16x42 My local range is 100 yards. I will spend most of my time there however I will be joining a range in Maine which goes out 400 yards. Will be bench rest often but I will also be out in the field eventually. 18 inch LaRue Stealth upper For this one I was going to save up and get a NF 2.5x10x32 mil dot Use will be similar to above but more mobile weapon 16 inch White Oak Armament fluted DMR Upper Looking for a close range optic for this one. It is very light with the fluted barrel. I liked the idea of red dot but I have an astigmatism and I am concerned the dot will be blurred due to some posts I read elsewhere. Choices here with the above caveat: Aimpoint CompM4 Eotech XPS2 - This was my choice but I a little concerned after reading all the negative comments. ACOG TA44SR-10 Circle Dot hard to find reviews of this sight. This is on the list because I see my other ACOG reticle crystal clear. Any advice, recommendations, or reviews will be greatly appreciated. About me. New to rifles. Shot pistols for a while, punching paper at the range. Could achieve pretty good groups but would not call myself a marksman. My situation changed and I was busy and went to the range maybe once a year. I always wanted an AR but never felt the need to rush out and get one. The recent election changed that. So far I have been shooting with Iron Sights and with the ACOG above. Can hit the paper at 100 yards easily with the ACOG. My eyes are not great and I struggle with the iron sights. Thanks! |

For a fixed power, I would recommend a 10x. Out to 500 yards, its plenty of optic if you have correctable vision.
The 16x would be better for a bench gun, but since you also mentioned the field, the 10x will give you a much better field of view. The 16 is limited in that area. If you end up getting the nightforce for your other rifle, the 16x may be decent as you'll essentially have your precision rifle with good FOV. Just figured I'd toss that out there incase you possibly overlooked it. As for your 16" rifle, I would highly recommend you look at a TR24 with triangle reticle. It will give you alot of the capabilities of a red dot sight, but 4 power magnification to help milk the most out of that barrel accuracy wise. You can still use the triangle reticle in exotic positions too, even if you don't have a cheek weld, you can still almost always pick up that triangle for positions such as suppine. Its essentially a lit etched reticle, so your astigmatism shouldn't be an issue. |
| Don't worry too much about the astigmatism unless it is really bad. I have some too and I just turn the dot down a bit if it is too bad. The key in my opinion is to go with a smaller moa dot. Instead of a 4 moa do a two moa and so on. Then you can turn it up a bit and let the blur slightly enlarge the dot size if need be for acquisition. It won't blur that bad unless you have bad astigmatism. Besides you want to focus on the target and look through the dot. |

Thanks guys keep them coming.
Marksman: I think to be realistic the 24 inch will spend most of the time on the bench with only occasional trips to the field. We are pretty limited in Mass. How is the T24 for close distance work? Is it quick inside 25 yards? Thanks! |

I spend most of my time shooting under 25 yards too. The RDS has the advantages of no magnification, and lighter weight, other than that....the TR24 is great. If I could only have one optic for the rest of my life, I'd have an aweful tough time choosing between the T1 and the TR24 triangle, but as of right now, the edge very well may go to the TR24. You cannot beat its versatility, that is for sure. |
