Hello, I have a DPMS 16" heavy A3 flat-top upper on a Stag lower and I would like to buy and install a thinner front sight post, but I can't seem to find a thinner front sight posts for a flat-top upper anywhere. All the thinner front sight posts are for the A2 upper and I read that the A3's sight post is .030" or .040" longer than the A2's front sight post, therefore you cannot use an A2 front post on an A3 flat-top upper. Does anybody know where I can buy a thinner front sight post for my A3 flat-top upper??? I would really appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks in advance. I have been thinking of carefully filing down the sides of my .070" width sight post with a small smooth file, but I'm not sure if that is a real good idea or not. Has anybody ever done anything like that before?

There is NO difference between the height of an A2 and A3 front sight post.

DPMS does sell a taller front sight post specifically for the A3 flat-top. They call it an extended front sight post. Here is the exact description of their replacement front sight post: "Extended length front sight post for detachable carry handle & detachable rear sight assembly. Approximately .030 longer post than the standard A2 front sight post (.070 wide) Four sides square."  Copy and paste to read for yourself:  www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=4768&cat=1702   I don't know if all AR makers have extended length front sight posts for A3's, but DPMS does and I just happen to have a DPMS upper. I do know for sure that an A3 detachable rear carry handle is lower than an A2 fixed carry handle and is really noticable when you try to stick your fingers through it. However, with that being said, you would think you would need a slighly shorter front sight post and not a longer one. Very strange and confusing.

You're confusing the issue of a standard front sight base and an "F" marked front sight base,  versus the standard  front sight post and a replacement front sight post.  It's not a difference between a standard A2 and A3 front sight post.

Wow, nice job with the pictures and explaination. I totally see your point now. I just checked my front sight base and mine doesn't have an "F" on it, so I have the standard length front sight post and therefore can order replacement front sight posts that are thinner. MidwayUSA just happens to have a nice assortment pack of different widths as well as posts with balls on top and I think even one with a "V" cut into it. That's great, so now I can order that knowing that it is going to work. You are a life saver. Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.
