| Hey everyone, Im new to the site...seems like lots of great info here so far. So im looking for a compact scope for my S&W mp15. PRIMARILY for target use. something with a multi reticle design would be fun to have but not a neccesity. Im not looking for an ACOG or anything real high priced since my life does not depend upon it but I also dont want cheap junk the wont hold zero either. So far, form looking around here, the Primary Arms 4x seems to be nice but they are out of stock for a while. I actually really like the Nc Star but heard they were junk. Very confused...lots of choices out there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! |
| FWIW I just got an Aimpoint 9000sc from Midway for $200. Arrived yesterday. Plan on putting it in a Burris PEPR mount for my m&p 15-22. From just playing around with it it seems very nice. Haven't mounted it up yet though. Also, Burris just came out with a new scope that lots of people seem to think will be a great middle of the road scope. Check out the other threads. |

While I've been reading for a long time, I'm also a new member on the forums, but planning on being here a long time. I'm running a DPMS sportical for personal use and a Colt on duty. I had originally bought a NcStar (for the DPMS) with a quick release lever, and it came apart after taking it off twice. Held a zero though. I had to tear it down and lok-tite every thread in the the thing, it now holds up fine.
I'm looking to upgrade though. I'm running a 3x and I'd like to back off to a 1x with maybe a quick remove magnifier. Problem is I have one major requirement, it can't be reliant on batteries for functionality. My sportical doubles as a personal WtSHtF defense rifle and I don't want to have a worthless optic when the batteries run out. I've set my eyes on a Leupold Prismatic. Seems quality made when I held it the other day at the store and it even comes with spacers for ride height. (Important if I buy a magnifier) Also important, is that it costs $500 for the mount, optic, and whole kit. I can't drop $1100 for a Trijicon. Thoughts? Thanks guys. |

"No batteries" does limit your choices. I'd considered the Leupold Prismatic myself but didn't care for the reticle (too busy for my tastes, wish they'd stayed w/their original circle-dot reticle) and being prismatic, eye relief becomes a consideration when shooting from unconventional positions w/imprecise eye alignment. Have you considered the Trijicon RX30? Huge FOV through the 42mm objective, unlimited eye relief, no batteries (just fiber optics & tritium) and the 6.5moa dot is great for CQB but not so well suited for shots much beyond 200m (my own tests). However, the reticle can be made to wash out under certain lighting conditions so I'd definitely run the RX30 w/BUIS. You can get the RX30 for $425 w/a reversible TA51 ACOG mount. HTH... Target shooting can mean different things. I just ordered a Burris 4.5-14x32 Timberline to put in a LaRue one piece mount. 200 for the scope and 200 for the mount. It's to be used for working up loads and shooting targets, rabbit and crow size critters out to 400yds with good light and out my backdoor. If you reload, you will get the use out of the 14. For my purposes and experience with other scopes, the 4.5 is not too big 50yds and out for targets. The LaRue is for minimizing hassles when I switch from gun-to-gun but I think I would have opted for the Burris mount if I didn't anticipate moving the scope around. The scope has mega eye relief which I want. If I were shooting pdogs all day, hunting seriously in the mountains, shooting bad guys, etc. I would have chosen a different scope.
Oh yeah, on the other end of the inexpensive spectrum, the Weaver V3 is a great little scope. Larry |

I use a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33 with Leupold Dot reticle. At 2x it is very fast and at 7x I can hit a beer can at 200 yards. This scope also has good eye relief and is fairly compact. The 2x-7x power range is very practicle for field use. When I shoot from the bench, or at longer ranges, I prefer the 4.5-14x40. Hope this helps.

Wow, this far down the page and nobody mentioned the Millett DMS 1-4x24. $200ish, reliable, durable, decent glass, hold great resale value (see EE), and there are 75 pages on them with generally positive info in this forum. I chose it over the Weaver because I think illumination is a must have!

| I have a Millet DMS-1 on my 6920 and love it for out to 200 but not more than that with my shooting skills. I also have a Trijicon TR20G with the BAC^ Reticle and love it on my target gun, the triangle takes a little getting used to but the glass is great. I have been pondering on swapping this scope with the Bushnell Elite 4200 3x9x40 that's on my hunting rifle(6.8 SPC) since the standard cross hair would help with target shooting and the tritium triangle would be good for low light hunting but all the optics mentioned are very good and are all in Larue LT-104 mounts of course, since their is no better mount that I've seen. So take your pick and you will be very happy with what ever you choose. |

The one I looked at in a local store appeared to have a simple cross-hair with circle. Seemed simple to me, but compared to others, I can see what you mean. I don't have plans to engage with this weapon beyond 200 yards, so that wouldn't be an issue. It is cheaper than the Prismatic, and looks like it could be lighter as well. This looks like a great suggestion! Thanks! Anyone else got one of these? If you include the lever mount, its the same price as my original plan.
