I just purchased an M&P 15T and added an Eotech 512 for optics. I also looked at the Eotech magnifiers, but they are also very expensive. I wanted an original Eotech sight for the quality and no parallax, but am wondering if I could get by with a knock off magnifier. A friend of mine bought a 4x knock off for about $80 and another has an original Eotech 3x which was about $600, and they seem to think that the knock off seems almost as good as the original. Are there any major quality gaps that would render a knock off useless? I don't expect to use a magnifier that often and since I am not a LEO with my life depending on this, I wonder if I could get by for 1/6 the cost without a huge quality gap, if it might be worth a shot. Anyone have other comparisons of the original vs. the replicas showing any major flaws? Are there some brands of replicas that are better than others? Thanks!

Sure, you can 'get by'. No major showstoppers, except finding a quality FTS mount.
IME, all the clones feel roughly the same, with the same glass quality and short eye relief. I'm using the 'quality' clone right now - the Burris tripler - and it's hard to tell the difference between the Tripler and the cheaper DragonRedAirsoft AimPoint magnifier. Same glass, same eye relief, different branding. I can tell the difference between the real-deal magnifiers and the clones, more notably the eye relief. The best magnifier I've ever used is the EOTech 4X (now discontinued). It was heavy and bulky but the square FOV and glass quality was excellent. |
