Can anyone point me to a scope mount that holds the scope high enough, and is see-through, for using BUIS without removing the scope from the gun? I suppose an offset mount could also work, the scope angled 45 degrees to the left or something...
With the current tall rings, the scope sits right in the way of the irons. Any help would be greatly appreciated. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y277/TheyCallMePavz/0926092028.jpg |

You might want to think about QR rings for the scope also.
There are a few scope rings with "see through" holes, but the best idea I have seen, would be an A2 carry handle, with a picatinny rail on top with the see through hole. Then put low scope rings on that sucker. It WILL make your scope sit quite high up, you'll need either a chin wield, or a very tall cheek riser to get it. |

Would I be better off with some kind of throw-lever quick-release base? The Leupold models are a bit pricey, but I suppose it's gonna have to be if there's any expectation in maintaining zero.
Something like this would be perfect, only preferably something actually meant for a real firearm... http://www.directpaintball.com/BT-Paintball-45-Offset-Picatinny-Mount-P18733C4648.aspx |

You can get offset rails, I know Yankee Hill Machine makes 45 degree offsets.
First item, you can choose how many slots you want.... But I dont know how rigid the scope would be at that offset, and it would also mess with your scope a bit as far as zeroing at different range. Not only would you have to compensate for elevation with range, but windage as well. http://yankeehillmachine.com/store/rails.html I would honestly go with a QR lever type system though. It really depends on how much you want to spend... If you go with QR rings, you might as well get a decent set, maybe 80-100 bucks. If you want to go with a QR Base, something like the GG&G Accucam base could go between the rifle and a set of cheap low scope rings. but its about 155 bucks too....
Of course, you could always try the 45 degree offset... Who knows how it'll work, i've never seen anybody do it on an AR15 before. About 18 bucks each for the 1-slot versions, or 20 bucks each for the 3 slot versions. If you didn't like it, you could sell em on the EE. |

If you leave you scope mounted like it is in the picture you run the risk of damaging it. You need a cantilever type scope mount that alows you to get the proper eye relief.
Best LaRue LT-104 / LaRue LT-139 Good Bobro / ADM / GG&G / JP Enterprise Decent Rock River /Armalite Will make due... Burris / SWFA |

Nevermind, I think I see what you mean. Having the rings mounted on both the upper and the handrail.
I can shift the rings to have both on the upper. That, plus the 45 degree offset-rails would put the scope in the perfect spot. The rear iron, even down, prevents the scope from coming back far enough for the natural cheek weld. I know it probably sounds awfully odd, as I've never seen a scope mounted anything but directly atop the firearm. But I think it will be effective, at least for my uses. |
