Hello, I am new to scopes on AR-15's. I just got out of the Army as an Infantryman and always used some type of close quarters optic (Eotech, Aimpoint, etc). Well I am awaiting my new DPMS sweet 16 to arrive at my dealer and was wondering what type of scope rings i would be needing as far as height? The scope I am looking at is a 30mm diameter, with a 56mm objectice lense. I am thinking I would need high rings? The rifle has an A2 style fixed stock. I just want to make sure the scope clears everything, but I am not goosenecking to see through the scope. Could someone here please help me make a good selection of rings. Thanks very much

I have 3 LaRue mounts. Two are for Aimpoints, one is for a Leupold Mark 4. I love them all. I have no reason to buy another brand. I think a one piece mount is much stronger than rings.

Due to the AR15 design the optimum height for Optics is 1.4” above the upper receiver.  This is due to the Receiver Extension, otherwise known as the “Buffer Tube”, which does not have a drop at the comb like a conventional rifle. Based on this, Mounts and Rings that put the center of the optic at 1.4” give the best cheek weld.    Lower Mounts and Rings can be used, but this increases the chance of canting the rifle or not having a proper cheek weld.

Standard Rings can be used but due to the limited space available on the Upper Receiver you may not be able to obtain the proper eye relief.

Cantilever Mounts are by far the best choice for AR15’s.  They allow the Scope to extend over the Delta Ring giving you the ability to get the proper eye relief.  Using a true Monolithic Upper eliminates the need for Cantilever Mounts.

Quick Detach Return to Zero Mounts and Rings are a personal preference…  I personally like the feature whether I need it or not.  I agree that it is not absolutely necessary, but the ability to remove the Optic for weapon maintenance and / or repair and simply putting it back on with-out losing Zero is a great option.   Having the ability to have more than one optic for the same gun and switching between them with-out having to re-zero is well worth the extra cost of the QD design.

With all that being said there are several manufactures that make good mounts and rings.  I use LaRue Mounts anytime they offer something for my needs.
