I'm putting together a nice grocery list of goodies for an AR build...I currently have a Sig 556 w/Aimpoint CompM4 and a Colt 6920 with an Eotech 512...now it's time for a midlenth optic. I'm really leaning towards an ACOG but have never used one before (I've spend plenty of time behind a scope, though). The reticle things get me though...I have two models picked out for possible purchase...I like the horseshoe-dot setup on the TA31H but I've seen a ton of TA01and TA01NSNs out there on SPRish builds. Do you think I'd be better off with either-or? I know that the TA01 doesn't have the fiber-optic strip on it but that the center of the reticle is black during the day (like a typical scope), that makes me wonder if the TA31H would be prone to bright sun washout since the center appears to be illuminated instead of black in the daylight? I'd just rather get some advice before dropping $1000+ on an optic I won't like. Thanks for the input!!!

Also, while this is a total "can of worms" question and has been covered MANY times before I'd just like some opinions. Since I have two carbines already (and SBRs are illegal in Michigan) I'm thinking about building a little more of a sharpshooter type AR. While I like the thought of an 18" SPR build the barrel length seems like it might be a little bit hefty (my 16" barrels with FHs are already long) how much real power do I stand to lose if I was to say, put a 14.5" Afghan(with pinned FH of course) upper together instead of an SPR? I hear anything from 500 fps. to 150fps...

I'm leaning towards the 14.5" tackdriver but do you think I'll come to regret it?

For the ACOG, the best thing to do is find a store that has some and play with them. I really like the TA31-RCO and F. Some like the TA01 and TA33. Its really personal preference.

If you go with 14.5" barrel for the other build. I doubt you would regret it. I personally like the look of a 18" or 20" barrel but they are no more accurate that a 14.5.

I just got the TA31RCO-M4cp. Many tried to steer me towards the TA11F for the eye relief but it was a 3x instead of a 4x. I've had enough time to learn the eye relief made little difference for me and I really like the extra magnification. I also like the chevron and fiber optic system. The BAC and BDC are slick too. I was playing with the idea of the ACOG 6x48 but it was another $500 and didn't look like it would fit a sight doctor if I wanted to add one later. Get a reticle you want, that's a personal thing I think but I doubt you'll be disappointed in any ACOG. They're friggin sweet.

i love the red chevron, not much obstructing view of the target, shows up really well, pretty much just awsome, i hope to get on myself.

I'm in the same boat as you, I want an acog but I'm not sure which reticle I would want. Right now I am leaning toward the TA31HG due to the horseshoe reticle. It seems like it will be a little quicker to pick up, and would be very useful against torso sized targets from 0-200 yards. I don't know for sure but it seems like the outer circle of the horseshoe would be very easy just to put over the torso and squeeze the trigger. I feel like the large 2moa center dot might be a slight drawback for precise shots, but I think it is small enough to be effective. I have also heard that the eye relief on the 4x acog's is a problem to some, but I don't know for myself.

I was told this too but wanted the magnification. Turns out I can pull my head back all the way to the rear of the stock and still get target acquisition through the scope. I would not shoot this way but wanted to see how much eye relief I could get. It was more than I could ever use so don't let that hold you back from getting the 4x.

I have a couple of TA31Fs and TA01 NSN. Like them both

If you really want that horseshoe/circle reticle - you might consider the NXS 1-4x24mm unit.  On a 14.5" Afghan it wouldn't be out of place.

Among the ACOGs, the TA11 is definitely the most flexible.  That said, I use the TA31RCO's exclusively, since that works for me.

Completely up to me to do-over? LMT MRP Upper with 1-4x NXS.  I'd have an 18" Barrel and a 14.5" w/ VC-1 or G6A2
OR It would be a 16.1" Recce with the 1-4x NXS
But I'm extremely happy with my 14.5" Pinned with the TA31RCO-M4

F1fanatic...

How do you like the Killflash on your RCO? I had looked at the RCO model...but the only differences between it and the other models seems to be the external windage controls and the the killflash. I have a killflash that came with my CompM4 and didn't like it much at all...it now sits in the empty Aimpoint box with my space (it's on a Sig 556..no need for a spacer on a piston gun).

I like it fine. Hope I never have a practical use for it but I think its tacticool and keep stuff from coming into contact with the forward optic.

What don't you like about yours?(Not to hijack the thread)

It seemed to REALLY darken the optic...like I was now using it while wearing sunglasses. It would be okay in VERY bright settings or in use in wide open areas. But I didn't like it for the fact that it seemed take away from the whole Bindon concept (like trying to assimilate a darkened tube to my vision). That's about the best way I can describe it. How accurate do you think the chevron is? It seems very, very small when I look at pictures of the reticle...much smaller than the "H" reticle or any of the other reticles. On, say, a percentage basis how much of the sight pictures does the actual chevron take up (if you've ever played Call of Duty4...the chevon is quite large and takes up probably 5-8% of the picture window on the game)?

I'm taking a guess here, but I bet you didn't like the killflash on your Aimpoint due to the shadows it created. I noticed the same thing on my ML3.

You won't even notice it when looking through a 4x ACOG.

The chevron is usable without obscuring your aiming point. It's been very precise for me.

ACOG's are in general most wonderful.  I would strongly recommened trying the eye relief of the 4x firsthand mounted on a weapon at a live fire range before buying one....some love them, some don't.
