Hey Guys -

So I am almost finished up with my Recce rifle (Noveske 16" Recon barrel), and I'm doing some research into optics. I've narrowed it down to two Nightforce scopes. The NXS 1-4x24 with the FC-2 reticle or the NXS 2.5-10x24 with the Mil-Dot reticle. I seem to be really torn on these two scopes. It seems the the 1-4 would be the most practical as all the ranges around here are only 200 yards so it would give me the ability to hit at those distances plus the speed up close. On the other hand, since the price is pretty close, I'm wondering if I would like something that has a bit more magnification to shoot at longer ranges if the opportunity presents itself. The only thing that would convince me not to get the 2.5-10x scope is that the 223 round loses steam quickly and that all that extra magnification may go unused. So I guess my question would be to see if anyone had any feedback on either of these scopes and how they compare for this type of rifle. I don't have a lot of knowledge about variable power scopes so any information and feedback would be helpful.

Those are both great scopes. Choosing between the two is easy depending on what type of shooting you will be doing.

If you hunt with your AR (predator hunting and small game), or you like to shoot itty-bitty groups at 100 yards or more and post your targets on the net , you will want more magnification.

If you do most of your shooting in close/CQB 25 - 50 yards, and you are shooting man size / pie plate targets, you will want the 1x.

I personally think 4x is enough to shoot sub MOA at 100 yards. I have done it with a 3x optic. But if you want to wring every bit of accuracy you can out of your Noveske - get the extra magnification. I would go with the 2.5-10 because I like to hunt with my AR and I like shooting small groups. I am not much of a CQB guy and I don't shoot tons of rounds. I like taking my time and going for little groups.

I guess it just depends on what you intend to do with it. The 10x will come in handy at 200 yards - even if that is the fartherst you ever go. Both are great scopes.

Thanks for your feedback. I already have an M4 with an Aimpoint and an ACOG that I use for CQB type shooting. I think I'm looking more for an accurate carbine for 200+ yard shooting, that's why I'm leaning towards the 2.5-10x NXS. I suppose that if I wanted to do CQB stuff with the Recce I could always go out and buy a more CQB type optic either a 1-4 or an Eotech/Aimpoint. I think I'm going to go with the 2.5-10x. Initially I'll be using this for the local high power match where we shoot at 6" steel plates from 200 yards. I think the greater magnification and the Mil-Dot reticle will be better suited towards what I'll be doing first with this rifle.

I love the 1-4x NXS but I would look at the 2.5-10x32 vs the 2.5-10x24 for that role. Which when I build mine will be the scope it will carry.

I've owned both the scopes your asking about. For the type of shooting your considering and the optics on your other AR, I would definitely go for the 2.5-10x32
