Could some folks give some comments on what is is the least expensive red dot that still has reasonable quality?

SIghtmark is alright ,I ve been using a tasco reddot form dunhams for a few years now with decent results. But remember you get what you pay for. With cheap optics its a crap shoot no gurantee of quaility and no customer service warranty etc.

I have a square sig and a round sig that came with some rifles.

The square one works great and I know a lot of folks just re-sell them.

Unless i'm mistaken the vortex strikefire has the best battery life of any of the less expensive red dots.

I just recieved one of the Primary Arms M3 clones. Seems like a good one. Only 150 rounds so far, but no problems so far.
The dot is plenty bright. It's no Aimpoint, but it's not suppose to be. Seems like a very good optic for the price.

The Primary Arms multi reticle uses the same battery and has comparable life to the Strikfire. I have two another models that have less battery life. One uses standard AA batteries and one takes that same batteries as a Aimpoint CompM3. The Strikfire is a quality product both would be a good choice. Here is a recent thread comparing the two with the pluses and minuses of each. I have red dot magnifier combos starting at $168

The auto shut off is a nice feature too imo on anything that doesn't have aimpoint battery life.

Ultra Dot 30. Commonly slide mounted on 45 auto pistols, the only RDS that Magnum Research recommends as able to survive recoil on their weapons. Made in Japan, the company that made the first red dot sight.

Although not tacticool at all I've had great luck with the generic looking 30mm BSA red dots.  I've had one mounted on an SKS-D for 15 years or so and NEVER had to re-zero.  I also have one on my Mac10 and it's still going despite what all the nay-sayers think.  It's been on there for a year now, about 10k rounds thru it, never been re-zero'd.

I have a StrikeFire on my AR SBR.  It works great but I haven't shot it whole lot so I can't really comment on durability.  I hear it's good tho...

I've heard the StrikeFire is nice but that outside the dot is not bright enough (even on the brighest setting).

That said, I'd get either a StrikeFire or a Primary Arms red dot.  Primary Arms has an excellent reputation and a good product.

I'm able to see the dot in bright sun against snow and lots of customers have commented on our forum that it is plenty bright in sunlight, even in the desert SW. So, I would take those rumors with a grain of salt.

There are two parts of a red dot that make for good daytime visibility. A bright reticle and quality reflective coating on the front lens. Mine have both. This is my newest model. The multi reticle for M3 style mounts. It has a bright 2MOA dot and three other reticles. $99. Single dot versions are $69

Here is a thread from our forum on customer feedback about the brightness of our StrikeFire: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=277&t=176295

We're currently using the best coatings and LED we can find for this price point.

The only way i can get my strikefire to wash out is if i aim it almost into the sun......

I've compared it right next to my real aimpoint M3 and i'd say it goes to the setting right before the brightest on the aimpoint or real close ......

I hunted with mine on my ar pistol for a solid week all day every day and never had a problem seeing the  dot.

The fact it comes back on to the last setting you had it on is nice also......

While I am very proud of my product and what we put into it my comments were not meant as a slam on the Strikfire. My guess those that reported problems were looking almost directly  into the sun or had a low battery.

Sure I want to sell my product. That is what we are in business for but whatever you buy look for the coating (Not all red dots have it) and buy from a trusted supplier with plenty of positive feedback. Stay away from the ebay specials, those companies don't give a damn about quality they are just selling a stolen logo.

I'm in no way trying to take away from the primary arms optics everything i've read about them says they are good to go.

I plan on replacing an antique tasco propoint i have on a browning buckmark with their Micro red dot to save a few ounces.

Just took my Strikefire out to sight in Sunday. The brightest setting was not needed out in the sun. I was seeing the dot very well several clicks down from the brightest setting.

And the green dot option was very handy as I had some targets where the bullseye was red, making the contrast easy to see.

BTW - it was very easy to sight in and the dot did not lose zero despite some rugged handling of the optic and my firearm. I am sure Primary Arms has a good product, but I challenge you to find Vortex's superior when it comes to service - I don't think there's anybody out there better. And if Vortex had ever even slipped up once, you know you'd have heard about it over and over again on this forum - and that has not happened, either!

Marshall, I took no offense at anything you said. No worries here. I appreciate that you've been complimentary of our product and I've been complimentary of yours as well. I have to echo your advice for people to stay away form the ebay sellers. And hopefully the members here take notice that our companies are supporting the site and that we both have good track records with CS and supporting our products.
