I bought a "20 upper from a friend and it had on top of it a big picatinny scope rail. See pic. I have since wanted to go with iron sights. I removed the scope rail and this is what was underneath. It appears that the carry handle was chopped off. Has it been chopped off? What I want to do is have a flat top picatinny rail that I can attach a back up sight or removable carry handle w/sights and install a removable front sight on the gas block. What do I need to get as far as the flat top rail to make this work?

I will appreciate any help.

Thats ruff looking.  Im not sure how you could make a new set up work.  You could buy a stripped flat top upper receiver and build it up using your upper parts there.

So I'm pretty much screwed to be able to do anything with it? How do the guys that chop off their carry handles get them to flat top rails?

It use to be an A2 top, now it's junk...

You can buy a stripped flattop upper and transfer the parts...

If it were me I would give that monstrosity back to my "Friend" via his rectum and follow it with a good old fashion beat down...

Hey I appreciate your feed back and letting me know what is going on with the receiver. I really expected to see an A4 type of rail under that mount when I took it off. Believe me my heart sank when I saw what was there even though I didn't understand fully know what I was looking at. I'll be talking to my friend soon.
