I've read/heard that the H-1 now has the same coating as the T-1, can this be identified by serial number or something?

If by coating you are refering to the anodizing on the sight body and not the optic coatings then yes, though I'm not sure if they are exactly the same.

If you buy a new one from a reputable dealer you should get the new one now as they have been that way for a while.

Yes, the newer H1 models should have the same matte-black anodizing that the T1 has. You could always ask and confirm this with the dealer you're planning on purchasing from.
