I am not meaning to be rude or argumentative, but I would like to please limit responses to actual combat vets, Please not LEO, carbine class attendees or competitors. What are your actual day to day experiences with the Matech? Pros/cons, likes/dislikes, durability, repeatablility etc.
This is for strictly back-up use. And I just don't want a Troy, simply because everyone else has one. I want something a little unique, but certainly of good quality and usability.

OIF II (04-05)  We had them then but hardly anyone used them with the issue CCOs on the M16A4 or few M4s we had.  Was too large and the hole was too small and the sight would wear and stay up in the way.
Now. We still have them and some unit SOPs require them to be mounted and so the ACOGs are not in the ideal eye relief position due to this and the new M4 CCOs are 100% so there has so far been no need for the MATECH.
The best "Soldier Proof" sight fielded was the KAS fixed 300m sight.  Had a small sleeve to make as small hole or take it out and you have a large ghost ring.

There are MANY better back up sights if you feel you need one.

Funny, same things the civilians say about them.  Go figure...

OIF 06-07, and actually I had to use one outside the wire for the last month I was in Iraq––we had to turn in our aimpoints.  I didn't have a probem with mine, zeroed it the way the instructions said and as the sight never left the rifle, it stayed zeroed the entire tour.

Mine never failed, although I did see some break and refuse to stay stowed.  the range knob on the left is moved way to easy, a couple of times I checked it after a bumpy trip and it got moved  to 600M.

That said, I rather liked it, altough optics are great, sometimes they fail, a guy at the three gun match today was asking for AA batteries for his EOTECH.  I just shook my head.

The Colt M4's that get issued now have no carry handle, just a RAS and MATECH rear sight.

I would say for a backup sight it works fine.

Scott and Arty8,
Thanks so much for the replies. Exactly the kind of honest and factual feedback I am looking for. You guys have actually lived, day in and day out, with this equipment (in extremely stressful conditions) and, I have found, are much less likely be be emotional in your critiques. It seems that like most things, this is not 100% black or white. What works for some might not work the best for others. Thats precisley why I want opinions from guys with your background. Again, thanks for your replies and most of all, thanks for your service!

Yeah, I'll admit, I was curious to see what the sandbox users would say, too!

In a year’s time, I never personally saw one break. I never heard of one breaking. I did see one loose its ability to stay in the down position. That was not a big deal at all. In fact we received some training from low speed high drag types, and they insisted we leave our BUIS up all the time anyway. (most of us didn’t after the training, but that is another subject)

This next part is probably going to generate some hate mail- Any BUIS is a Back Up Iron Sight! Its purpose it to be a backup in case your primary sight goes down. My opinion is that since it is a back up sight, not your primary sight, it really doesn’t matter if it’s some fancy name brand or Chinese junk. This is not going to sit well with some folks but that’s OK, you asked for an opinions and there is mine.

I agree very well with that.  That is why I still like the old KAS 300m fixed.  Zero and forget and it is out of the way...............if I ever put one on.  Way too much thought is going on with the BUS for some.

I ran with a troy on my rifle while I was over (personal sight)

From what I've seen though I'd have to echo the previous two.... I've seen guys walking around with them broken and stuck in the up position and the aperture looks too small for general combat usage (though very nice for the KD range)

but like I said, any combat experience for me was with a troy....
