I'm no expert, but I think most their problems were with the N battery models.  I have a 512 and no complaints.

Yes, almost all problems with Eotechs were resolved with the revision "F" If you buy a new one this will be what you get, I believe the rev f came the end of 07? not sure on that. It will have a "F" marked in the bottom corner.

The EOTech known issues are:

1. EOTech N series (551, 511) - Problematic and discontinued.
2. EOTech 553 battery contact recall - New model 553s do not have this problem but older models do. The older models must be retrofitted with the new battery compartment to fix the problem.
3. EOTech 557 NV Whoosh reticule - Large thread on this here in the Optics section. It looks to be an isolated run as I haven't met anyone else with this problem on their 557.
4. Leaking batteries - Affects all EOTech models? and can be mitigated by using Lithium batteries instead of Alkalines.
5. Compressed battery spring causing shutoff during recoil.  This is supposed to be addressed by new XPS series with transverse battery.

There's no EOTech representative on this board so some of this info may need to be updated.

Picked up a 512 2 months ago. No problems yet. Original batteries still in it and still working.

Does the new 516 require a riser to get over the front sight?

No, it has an integral riser so it's already 1/3 lower cowitness.
