Are they any good?  I found a Sightmark 8.5-25x50 for under $300. Is that a good deal and is it a good scope?

More information always helps with these types of questions, what rifle would this go on, what would you be using it for, what is your budget?

I would not trust any optic that costs $220.00 to stand up to any type of abuse. While I will never have any experience with Sightmark, I am sure they are just as bad as any of the other low budget scopes we read about daily on this sight.

It will go on a 6.8 AR. I want to eventually get a Leupold Mk4 but I am looking for something to hold me over for a few years until I finish school and get a job that will allow me to get a Mk4.

IMO 8.5-25 is way to much magnification for a 6.8 AR, I would recommend something in the 2.5-8 to 3.5-10 range. If you are looking for something to hold you over for a couple years, I would suggest hanging out on the EE or head over to The Sample list and look for a Leupold, Nikon, or Burris that fits you price range.

Do a little research and find lower end optic from a reputable company that fits your needs. Just stay away from BSA, NCstar, Barska, sightmark, leapers, the list goes on and on. If a scope has every possible tactical feature and retails for a couple hundred dollars, do you honestly think they put any engineering into it, what are their manufactoring standards, do they even have a quality assurance section, or did they just throw a bunch of tubes and glass together hoping the turrets are connected to anything and saturate the market so they make enough profit per unit to cover costs.

You said it is just to tie you over for a while, do not waste your money on a cheap POS, you may regret it.
