Hi guys, I recently purchased a DPMS panther lite flat top with 16" lite barrel. I am pleased with the rifle except that the barrel heats up really quick. When I bought the rifle I also bought a UTG complete rear sight. My fun with open sights has quickly wound down...I would now like to get an inexpensive mount and fixed power scope. Can I get some recommendations from you guys? I know I need a riser of some sort to see over the front sight, what else do I need? Thanks a lot for any input.

| For scope magnifications greater than 3X, the front sight will be invisible through the optic. The standard ring/mount height for an AR puts the optic centerline at 1.40 inches above the rail. That's the same height as the iron sights, so one might think that the front sight will be in the way. The front sight will be directly in the center of the optic field of view at this height, but it will be invisible. For a magnification of 1X like an EoTech might have, the front sight will be clear as a bell through the optic, but as magnifcation increases to 3X and beyond, the front sight disappears. Individual rings, and single piece mounts are offered by the various manufacturers that place the optic at this height without using risers. Nothing wrong with risers, but if you can get where you want to be without additional parts and weight, why bother? |

As far as I know, Burris makes quality products, and the one you reference has gotten a lot of favorable press. Note that Burris defines their mount heights from the base of the mount (the part that sits on the receiver rail) to the lowest point on the lower ring. The radius of the optic has to be added to that height to get the centerline height. The picture in the link "looks" like it would be in the 1.4 to 1.5 inch high category, but the actual height isn't specified. Personally, I'd go for a 1" scope tube, as there are more scope options available than with the 30 mm tube.
I have a 3-9X40 Leupold scope on a similar mount made by Larue (LT-104) and it provides ample height for clearance for the objective lens as well as puts the centerline at a comforatble height for shooting. Had the Burris mount you reference been available when I was mount shopping (and in a 1" tube diameter) I definitely would have given it a look, especially when noting the attractive price. I also understand that the Burris mount is currently very hard to find and backordered indefinitely, but would put that in the rumor category. |

That Burris Mount is nice. I just recently purchased a Pair of Burris extrme tactical rings but I like the mount your looking at better. While the Jury is still out, I just purchased a Sightron 2.5X 32MM Scope that I really like. I tend to be a minimalist with AR 15 optics. I would not go more than 4X on anything other than a varmint rig or unless i had the $ to get a Les Baer AR 15. |

I would really like to do the Burris PEPR mount but unfortunately it is hard to find. Any idea when it will be back at SWFA? What about the xtr rings? What height do I need to clear a Pentax 1.75 - 5x20? Thanks again. Hardy The PEPR mounts haven't been released yet. They were supposed be released late February but I think Burris under anticipated the popularity of them. The extra high XTR rings will give you the same height as the PEPR mount. |
