I've read the article about mounts and it lists afew companies that have rail extensions, but really does not detail features or build quality.  I'm looking for a perm mount and leaning towards a GG&G only becuase the web pictures make it appear as a sturdy part.  Any thoughts on brands/sources for a 1/2" or less extension for a flat top.

I have the GG&G scout rail, and I like it pretty well.  It's not a quick release mount, and the socket screws that hold it on are pretty low profile.  It's got rounded edges on the rail slots, which I like too, as the sharp ones get beat up more easily and catch more on stuff.

The extended part is high enough to clear fat handguards, and it raises the rail 0.55".  It also leaves a slot open at the rear of the flat top, which can allow some BUIS to fit there.  There's not quite enough room for an ARMS 40 BUIS, but other sights may fit.

It doesn't have a recoil lug molded in, and uses the round shafts of the screws to hold it against the slot walls.

Here are the things I look for in an extended rail:

- Recoil lug design - does it have a separate lug (like the Armalite mounts and rings), square screw shafts (like the ARMS #36 and #38 rails), or round screw shafts (like the GG&G).

- Does it attach with QR (levers, more expensive), semi-QR (thumbscrews, which protrude a good bit), or non-QR (regular hex screws).

- Does it fit from the top (like the GG&G above) or does it have to slide on from the front or back (like the ARMS #36/38).

- Is there room to mount a BUIS behind it, if desired (the RRA extended scout rail doesn't leave room, the GG&G does).

- How much height does it give (this affects what rings you'll use for what scope).

- How far forward does it let you mount a scope (I need a lot of forward eye relief, with the eyepiece well ahead of the charging handle, so I need extended rails).

Here's a sampling of some popular ones, and there are more out there:

The GG&G rails work quite well.

I chose the ARMS:

How'd you get your rear BUIS to align with your front sight?

Thanks for the links, they helped.

In terms of recoil lugs, am I assuming given the sequence the pin is the most secure followed by the square lub and the round being the least secure?

I'm thinking the weight of the scope is going to be more of a contributing factor to movement than recoil.

You're right about the best theoretical performance.  I haven't seen a lot of real-world difference in recoil lug design performance, except when there's not one at all.  As long as the rail's tightened securely and you're shooting .223, it's not going to matter that much.
