They are .mil issue and I'd never spend money on one.  Can't stand them.  Mine on my issue M4 is stuck in the down position.  I've even tried using tools to leverage it into the up position.  It's frozen solid.  Mine has drawn blood before when I tried to open it and my finger slipped off the sight.  The edge around the peep hole isn't too awfully sharp, but it was sharp enough to scrape me up pretty good.  Seen plenty of others that had the same issue as mine and a whole lot more that wouldn't lock in the down position.  Just because it's mil-spec doesn't mean it's any good.

It's a great site for 55 bucks.

In the end you may just end up with a Troy. IMHO they are about the best but at 140 bucks may be out of range now.

Use the Matech and if you have a problem then upgrade later.

LOL... Had the one that would not stay down.  My old issue one (new when I got it) worked but just a few times of up/down and the thing would not stay down for love or money.  Finally took it off.  Don't use one now with the M4 CCO.

I have a see thru riser with a scope so mine is in up position all the time. I guess most GI's keep theirs up all the time too so it hasn't had a chance to fail for many.

Why would you assume this?  We are issued ACOGs and you can not keep it up under a ACOG and are issued M4CCOs and why would you want a stupid lollypop sight in your FOV with a CCO?  You know what you do when you ASSume don't you?

Most GI's keep it up all the time because it has failed and won't lock down.  The failure rate from what I've seen is probably at least 25%, maybe higher.  Most of those won't lock down.  A very few, like mine, get stuck in the down position.  Most of those can be pried up with some kind of tool.  Some of them refuse to move.  As many as I've seen fail, there is no way I'd spend money on one.

GI's don't tend to treat their weapons very well, but that is the only part that I have consistently seen fail on the M4.  I've seen other things fail, but nothing else approaches the failure rate of that sight.

Amazingly enough as an Infantry Company Commander all of my Soldiers were not issued Acogs, we were split pretty evenly between Aimpoints, Eotechs, CQ/Ts, and Acogs. Also I never had anyone with a broken Matech sight. I guess my Soldiers weren't kicking down doors hard enough to cause the BUIS to fail.

As a Back Up Iron Sight (BUIS) the Matech is worthless and heavy. I have no need for a 600 meter BUIS. It is very well made and the only issues I have ever seen are with people over tightening the mounting bolt. I wish the Army had stayed with the 300m KACS I was first issued back in 2001.

The Matech is alright.  Its biggest flaws is the pin that the aperture pivots on backing out and the aperture is always flipping up on its own.
Or the aperture spring breaking and the sight cant stay up.

I have one, and don't care for it that much.  It's a longer-range sight, with only a small aperture (and some people like this about it), the bump that keeps it down wears over time and won't hold it in the down position (as others have reported), it's too high to mount under most magnified scope/mount combos (0.75"), and it takes up more slots on the rail than many other BUIS, if that matters.  Many folks have snapped the clamp from over-tightening.
