I'm still trying to decide between the Aimpoint ML3 and the Aimpoint T1.  Looking at the all the great pics of rifles, I see that optics are mounted far forward on the receiver, far back, and in the middle.  What determines where you guys mount your optic?

I know at some point I'll get a 3X magnifier, which would require at least a middle position on the receiver, but I'm curious to what makes you mount the optic where.

If you get the 3X magnifier, you have to mount it as far forward on the receiver as possible.

I'm assuming the 3x should be as far back as possible and the T1 or ML3 should be litterally as close as possible... close to almost touching.

But say you don't have a 3X, why have the optic in one position vs the other?  Also, should I mount the optic in the spot it will most likely end up once I get the 3X... meaning, do you get accustomed to having it in one position over the other?

Personal preference. Run it in different configs and find what works best for you.  Some like to put it out front because it's slightly quicker to transition target to target. Some like it closer to the eye so the tube is ghosted to a greater degree.
Less thinking and more shooting will solve your dilemma.

Solid advice.
