I'm going to mount my Leupold 3-9x40 Mark 2 using Larue's QD LT-104 mount on my Bushmaster 18" carbine, and Larue says their mount will place the center line of the scope 1 1/2" above the rail. I've tried holding the scope in that approx. position (still waiting on the mount) and don't see any interference from the standard front sight. I'm hoping I don't have to remove that...Should a scope that height have any issues with the front sight?
Thanks, Tom http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/catalog/P1011738.JPG |
| At 3-9 power magnification, you probably won't even see the front sight even if it was in line of sight. If anything, it will be a faint shadow on the bottom. Nothing to worry about. If it does bother you, there are a plethora of folding front sights. I personally have a PRI and love it. |

Well, all seems to work as advertised. I can't see any sign of the front sight with the scope safely in its new mount. Now all I need to do is fine-tune the eye-relief distance. The rifle is still fairly new to me, so getting a consistent cheek weld is still a challenge.
Thanks for the responses. Cheers, Tom http://images46.fotki.com/v1442/photos/7/749432/7044642/IMG_1955-vi.jpg |

Just curious, though...does anyone have pics of a cut-down front sight, or advice on how to go about it? After further review, I am getting a bit of shadow at some magnifications, so I'm toying with the idea of just cutting down the front sight and putting a folding Troy on the front rail. I did a search, but couldn't find any threads on this subject.

I think this is what you're looking for. It has a section on cutting down the front sight to just the gas block.

Thanks for the link. Could that be done w/o removing the front sight assembly? If I'm going to do that, I might as well just replace it with a separate gas block... Any thoughts? Cheers, Tom It could be done without removing from the barrel, but then it would be harder to re-finish... I guess you could tape it off and use duracoat. The benefit of using a low profile gasblock cut down from an FSB is that it still attaches using taper pins, versus clamp on or set screws. Therefore you still have the most durable attachment method, and don't have to worry about your gas port and block being misaligned... - AG |
