I have a cheapo and it works just fine at 100 yds and a bit further. Doesn't do much good for me at 200 yds though (I can't see bullet holes). I think that's where the quality spotter scopes come into play. I use a telescope for far shots cause I have it and I'm too cheap to by a good spotter.

That Bushnell looks and sounds nice.

anything in the cheaper range that will work out at 2 and 300 yards?

Nothing works well out to 300 yards with .223 rounds. 300 is where it is just hard to see the holes no matter what.  Any half assed decent spotting scope will work at 200.  I have a 32X Bushnell and its fine at 200 but 300 is as much of a guessing game as it is seeing the target, especially where there is significant mirage.

I have a Winchester 20x-60x I got at Cabellas.  I got it because I target shoot a .17 at 100yds.  It works great as long as its not too windy.  It was fairly cheap too if I remember correctly.
