My father in-law has a brand new LMT tactical rear sight.

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/v/vspfiles/photos/LMT%20Rear%20Sight-2T.jpg

The sight looks like a standard A2 rear sight with the same internals. The problem is that after the first time out the rear base of the sight(that is around the aperture and attaches to the elevation knob) twists to left if looking through the sights to front sight post.  It did not do this before taking it out to shoot.  However, if you max out the elevation up or down it straightens itself back out.  I have searched but I can not find if anybody else has had this same problem. Does anybody have any ideas what might be the problem. If no one does it might be time to contact LMT.

They all "twist" a little to the left.  It's screwed in.  Won't affect function.  You could replace the rear sight pillar to a Smith Enterprises that has finer (more) threads, but why?

Just a quick clarification. Is the "twisting" to the left a characteristic of the LMT sight or the A2 sight in general? I am guessing that it's the LMT sight. Because none of my A2 sights "twist". But I just want to make sure for future reference.

Yea, like you said it did not affect the function. I sighted it in for him(I did not notice it then) and in shot great.  It was noticed it when I was showing him how to field strip and clean it.

I have the same complaint with mine. Still, it doesn't mess with the ability of the rifle to group like it should be. It really isn't something that should be worried about but I am semi-OCD. I was thinking about shimming it will something very thin......

Yea, I am semi-OCD too. I am just disappointed, because of all the reviews that I read on that sight I never heard of this quirk, I figured it would go nicely on his S&W MP15 ORC that he was getting for a Christmas present. Plus, I have heard wonderful things about LMT. Yea, it still functions but there just seems something wrong with a rear sight that twists especially when someone pays $120 dollars for it. I should have just got a A2 carry handle for him . Needless to say I think I am going to shy away from LMT for a while.

Carry handles will do it as well.  Theres a spring and ball on the left side of the sight that causes this.  It's supposed to guarantee consistent sight positioning and is inherent to the A2 sight design.  Armalite even has a memo on it.  It's been discussed here in the past.

Thanks for the link, it was quite informative.  I always try to search before posting but I did not see anything. Maybe it's time I become a member.

My other A2 sights move a little but not much. Hell I would say hardly noticeable. But my father in-laws LMT MOVES a lot.  There is probably at least a 3/32"- 1/8"gap after it twists. Nearest thing I can think of for such a large gap is this quote from the Armalite memo.
2. Depending on the buildup of tolerances, the cocking of the rear sight may be quite noticeable.
While this may be somewhat unattractive, it is intentional, and is supportive of good accuracy.
All M16A2 pattern sights display this cocking to some degree.

Basically all the tolerances kind of snowballed.

I'm on the flip-side of that.  I have an LMT BUIS where the tolerances match up well (little twist) and a BCM carry handle where they do not (lots of twist).  Like someone else said, it doesn't affect function.  Its just one of those things that you either deal with or it will drive you crazy.
