What scope would you recommend for hunting varmints within 250 yds?
Why do you like it? Aprroximate cost? |
|
I would go with a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40mm scope. Not sure what the going price is for one of these currently but know you can get a number of different reticles that suit your tastes. I like Nikon glass and think they are great optics for the price. I think I am about to start looking for about the same setup for my LMT MRP upper in 6.8SPC. |

Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15x40 mil-dot with target turrets. Around 270 here. I would buy it because it works great for varmint hunting. Great piece of glass for the price. I have the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 and it's an AWESOME scope, but I wish I had more magnificaiton. I'd replace it with a 5-15x40 in an instant. The Bushnell is crystal clear and very decent in all respects. |

I use a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X Millldot reticle on my Varmint rifle and it works great. 6-18 maybe a little overkill for .223 but I like the extra magnification. i just picked one of these up. the optics with my vision are excellent. low light capability is very good, crystal clear out to 275 with a moderate overcast & full moon |

Are we talking about coyotes and bobcats, or prairie dogs and ground squirrels?
Take a look at the Weaver extreme 2.5-10x scopes on closeout for under $300 at Natchez |
|
I'd trust the Mueller over a Trophy (higher-end Bushnells are better), but my Mueller 4-16x50 gets dark with very tight eye relief at the high magnifications. I rarely use it over 10x. High magnification and low price just don't mix very well.
Personally, I'd either spend a little more for better glass and fewer doo-dads, or get lower magnification. The Buckmasters, 3200s, and Weavers mentioned above are all better bets than either of the scopes you mention. |
|
Take the Weaver in a heartbeat over the Mueller or Bushnell mentioned.
In the inexpensive scope class, I have had a bunch of Weavers and all have have been repeatable with good glass. In fact for small critters, I would recommend a 4x16 Weaver V16 model. I have used the same V16 scope on everything from a .270 and a .300 Win and a couple of .308s. Over the years, I have never knocked it out of adjustment and it tracks as perfectly as the day I bought it. In short, go with a Weaver if you cannot afford a Leupold or IOR or something in that class. |

I see them heavily discounted elsewhere too, are they gonna stop making them or something? |

The Weavers are good scopes. Like the Bushnell 3200s they are made in Japan, not the third world.
The Weaver scope brand got sold last year (by Meade to ATK), so maybe they are shaking up the product lineup for 2009 and getting rid of their existing inventory (just a guess). ATK already owned the Weaver rings and bases business. |

If you are looking some really good glass they are a few I can recommend.
Nightforce, USO, and Leupold. Here is a NF 2.5-10x32mm w/ GG&G mount.
Here is a Leupold Custom Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm LR/T M1 Turret, M1 Side Focus, w/ Mil-Dot or TMR Reticle.
For a low-cost alterative the Bushnell ELITE 3200 5-15x40mm Tactical Mil-Dot would be a good way to go. I like how the Bushnell's parallax can be set all the way down to 10 yards, but I also like the Nikon's higher magnification and side focus. Trying to keep the cost around $300. |

I just picked up a new, unopened Nikon Monarch 5-20x on ebay for $390. It arrived perfectly as advertised. There are deals out there if you look. Oh and the Monarch is AWESOME! WOW is all I can say..... |

The Nikon have very nice the Bushnell have nice glass also. What makes me not care for the Nikon is the 1/8moa clack. If you are doing true Bench-Rest shooting the 1/8moa will be nice but for the most part it will take you forever to make field adjustments. | I wouldn't rule out the lower end bushnell scopes. I think either a bushnell legend or a nikon prostaff are decent choices in the under $200 range. In the 200-300 range, I like the bushnell elite 3200 scopes or the nikon buckmasters. No experience with the weavers although that did look like decent deal. You don't have to spend a grand to get a good dependable scope. Course those high end scopes with teh 98% light transmission are nice if you can afford them. |
