I have been doing research for optics for my new AR. I have narrowed it down to either the Comp M4S with the 3X magnifier or the ACOG TA31TRD. The ACOG comes wth the trijicon red dot as well so you have both CQB as well as distance covered with the optic.
AS far as price, the optics are comparable. I have a Comp M2 that I like very much so I'm sure I will like the M4 but I have never used the magnifier. Battery life is awesome with these optics as well as the M4 operating on AA's. The biggest question on this setup is durability of the magnifier and the two piece setup (two mounting brackets with the magnifier being a flip style mount). The ACOG is also a two piece system but the CQB portion of the sight is the red dot that mounts on the ACOG itself. My judgement is telling me this looks like a more durable system especially if you use the winged mount which protects the sides of the red dot. The red dot comes with trijicons lifetime warranty. This system takes up less space on your weapon but can you co-witness with the ACOG? I also don't know what to expect from the battery life of the red dot. What experience can anyone offer me with these two setups? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. |

I have a TA31DOC, which is basically the exact same thing as the TA31TRD except it has the Doctor Red dot on top instead of the Red dot... don't ask me the difference, all i know is the Doctor costs more. Anyways, i love it! the ACOG shoots great, i put an ARMS throw lever mount on it and it holds it's zero after taking it off my flattop. The red dot is extremely accurate, i've got one hell of a grouping with it at 50 yards.
The Red dot is supposed to last.. a really long time. It has this little cover that kills it and saves the battery life when you're not using it. So it saves the battery life even more than the 30k hours or whatever it was (i can't remember). Only problem is that you have to switch from a cheek weld shooting through the ACOG to a chin weld when you want the red dot, which i don't have much of a problem with, but i know some people don't like it. If you're shooting 5.56, i don't see much of the problem, the target aquisition with it is great with both eyes open. All in All i love it. I can't say anything for the Aimpoint as how i've never shot one or seen one, but i can tell ya the ACOG is great, even if it is expensive. I plan on buying an Aimpoint for my next optic since i already have an ACOG:) Especially after hearing a marines experience with it. Anyways, I recomend it, as you can see from my lengthy review. :) |

I have a TA31F ACOG on my AR and a TA01 on my sons AR. The 31F has the chevron, fiber optic/ tritium and the BAC, the 01 has the crosshairs and tritium.
I still prefer my 31F and we shoot from 15 yds to 100+, and with both eyes open I can use the 31F w/ chevron pretty quick for CQB. My son (teenager) loves the 01 w/ crosshairs and is just as fast close up.... young eyes and reflexes!!! He also shoots both eyes open. I sold off my EotEchs and an Aimpoint after I got the 2nd ACOG..... now I need a couple more for these latest builds!!! +1 for the ACOGs.... |
| I have a TA31F and I just picked up a RX30 (Trijicons new reflex sight) I must say for range use 50 yards (maby even 25) the ACOG beats the hell out of a RD sight. but I have found RD sights have there place in CQB and make it easy to hit your target at closer ranges.. but if I could only have one it would be the ACOG.. If you are going to get a RD sight anyway look into the RX30 I must say it is one nice sight, No need to worry about batterys or changing brightness settings when going from a bright to a dark room or from a dark to a bright room.. I was hitting the 200M steal plates with no probs with the RX30 but I would say the ACOG does it much better and you can see what you are doing rather then hear it.. for a range gun I would say get the TA31F for a CQB/home defence AR. I would say go with the RX30.. Trijicon makes the best optics you can get so you cant go wrong either way.. The reason I went with the RX30 rather then another ACOG is just do to CQ shooting.. if you already have a ACOG go with a RD sight if you dont have a sight go with the ACOG unless you are just going to be doing CQ shooting.. |
