I saw a factory reconditioned scope on ebay today from SWFA for a good price.  I'm confident that SWFA is selling a good product but I'm worried the limited time warranty (90 days) will bite me in the ass.  Anyone think that buying a factory reconditioned scope is worth saving the $150 on a new scope with a full warranty?

If the factory gets that many scopes back that they fix and resell them, I wouldnt buy one.

I wouldnt buy a new one if I saw they were selling reconditioned ones.

Nikon?

depends...whats the full warranty on the new scope.  If it's lifetime then it's worth buying the new one.

If the full warranty is only a year...probably not.

It also depends on what the use of the scope is.  If you plan on sending thousands of rounds down range on a big caliber gun then get the new one.  If you're using it on a 22LR then go with the reconditioned one.

About 10 years ago I bought a crappy Bushnell for a crappy 10/22.  A couple years later the crosshairs shifted.  I sent it to them, it was well out of warranty.  It had a couple scratches on it from where I mounted it to the rifle.  Anyway, they sent me back a better scope, brand new, and all they hit me up for was $8.95 shipping.

I'm assuming my original piece was remanufactured and resold.

Nobody builds a perfect product, sometimes some rework is necessary.  It's good they remanufacture returns rather than trashing them.

There is nothing wrong with a reconditioned scope....you can save big bucks that way...I have a reconditioned Nikon Buckmaster on my RRA HB and it works like a charm.......

I have a couple reconditioned Nikon Prostaff's. They were never mounted in rings before and there wast'nt a mark to be found anywhere on them. I think someone over at  SWFA Optics talk said alot of these are display models and old stock from places like WalMart,Gander Mountain, ect. that get returned for factory credit.

I have a completely opposite opinion on this one.  Having worked in IT and used re-con hard drives for server from Seagate & WD the "re-con" drives are actually tested more that off the line production.  Each got 1 on 1 attention that led to failure rates about half that of production drives.

As long as the warranty is the same as new you should be g2g.  Nikon warranty turnaround is to be desired though.  Leupold is 2nd to none.
