Tritium, by nature, is a radioactive, gaseous isotope. As such, night sights only work by containing tritium inside a quartz / glass vial that is coated in a phosphorous material. So technically, no, you couldn't have Tritium that is painted on.

HOWEVER, there are a few things, such as phosphorescent paints, that you can add to the posts. The only catch is that you'll have to have a light source to charge them up and they will eventually go dark, requiring more light to work.

You'd be better off getting a tritium front post. They're a bit of money, but if the ability to have a ready to go sight ALL the time is what you're after, then by all means, that would be the most effective answer.

I think you can get a Trijicon Tritium Front Post for $51.00 on Optics Planet.  Meprolight makes them as well as XS sighting Systems all configured just a litltle differently.

Is it true the Tritium front post can be bright enough to wash out your sight picture?

Not in my experience.  The post is somewhat thicker, however.  Not an issue for the distances that I'm typically working with.
