good or bad?

You get what you pay for.

I have one of their cheaper "tactical" mil-dot scopes and I'm not impressed with the quality. I threw it in the corner of my workshop with the rest of the flotsam.

Bad, they suck. Save up for something that works.

Put one on the 10/22.

That's as far as it goes. Period.

What is it that makes these optics "bad"? And I've heard "you get what you pay for," a million times... isn't there any optics that are halfway decent that isn't an eotech and doesn't cost $300+?

Shoddy construction, flawed glass, won't hold zero with more than a .22 recoil...etc.

Any conceived, designed and manufactured in China is at a handicap right out of the gate. They can't even make baby formula or animal feed that is not toxic...

NCStar, BSA, BEC, Leapers, etc... are all the same company, essentially.

The metals are brittle. The tubes are thin, and usually multipiece. The glass is not fomulated or ground properly, the coatings are lackluster. The windage and elevation
adjustments are friction fit, not locking.... and the list goes on.

Bushnell Elite 3200,  Weaver V3,  Burris,  Leupold... All make "fair" to "great" glass
Well under $300.  What is it specifically you want?

well, I was looking for a red dot, but I want it to magnify at least 3x, So maybe more like a scope... I'm just using it for plinking, but don't want a regular deer scope(style). *I forgot what they're called*

+1

I'm on my second Burris, fullfield II and XTR-14, and love them for the quality/value! I like nikon and bushnell as well, haven't used a weaver but the V3 gets great reviews. Depending on whether you want a magnified or red dot optic i'd say Burris or Bushnell for getting the most bang for the buck.

Bottom line, You are going to have to give up something.  Either the cash, or the illumination, or the magnification.  If you buy an NCStar, you give up all three.

The least expensive remotely reputable product I could possibly mention with a straight face will be too much for your taste once you add a mount.  and even then,
it can be hit or miss on quality.

Millet DMS-1  1-4x Illuminated  with RRA or Armalite mount = @ $365.00

well, I guess I'll have to stick with the iron sights for a while. It's kind of hard for an 18yr old to have the good toys!

thanks everyone for all of your help!!!

While good for practice, it doesn't HAVE to be that way.

You were looking to include three distinct elements (CQB, Magnification, illumination) that when combined mean $$$ if the item is going to work as advertised.

If you compromise one one or more requirement, you could get a quality product.

Bushnell Elite 3200 Firefly 1.5-4x  http://www.swfa.com/pc-8353-184-bushnell-15-45x32-elite-3200-rifle-scope.aspx But, you'll need a mount. This is a variable, Pseudo illuminated Scope
that has a 1.5x power setting, passable for close range.

Weaver V3 1-3x powered variable, good track record, low price. also requires a mount.
NO Illumination, just black crosshairs.

Or A Burris Fastfire Mini Red dot with no magnification, but you will need a riser.

I have a 4X rubberized on my Colt A2 () and haven't had to reset the zero or had any problem in at least 4,000 rounds.
It is range use under 200 yards and I would slap a quality optic on if I was using it for "work".
Oh, yeah, I got it used on flea-bay. And I have an NCStar spotting scope that I can almost make out .223 holes at 100 yards. FTW!!

Yes there are, just look for any other thread on NCStar optics and you will see a dozen alternative choices that are quite good quality.
