I have a Bushmaster flat-top and am trying to find a resonably (cheap) priced set of scope rings to mount a 3x9 scope with a 40mm objective lens.
All I can find locally is weaver x-high rings which are not tall enough. I really don't want to add a spacer. I have seen rings in the photo thread but can't seem to find a source for really tall ones. Anyone help? Thanks |

You want rings that put your scope centerline somewhere around the iron sight centerline, which is 1.4" above the rail. Some rings are spec'ed to the centerline, and others are spec'ed to the bottom of the ring, so you have to add 0.5" (1" tube) or 0.59" (30mm tube) to get the centerline.
Decent, inexpensive rings that are high enough for an AR are Burris XTR (extreme) x-high ($50), Warne AR15 rings ($45), Millett AL00722 AR15 rings ($25), and Millett Tactical High ($45). The Millett Tactical and Burris XTR are similar extra-wide rings. The Millett AL angle-loc rings are windage adjustable, which some people like, but I hate, as you can lose zero easily when removing and re-installing the rings. I loc-tited one side of my angle-locs to keep it from shifting. You can see all these at http://www.swfa.com/c-9-mounts-rings-and-bases.aspx |

I've had good luck with mine once I got them tweaked, though they're on a gun I don't change optics on much, and are lower versions. They're good rings, and are popular on traditional rifles that need more windage tweaking.
You can also get nice looking ring inserts from GGG for $15 that will reduce 30mm to 1": http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=233&parents=106 I haven't tried them yet, but they look like the best reducers for the money so far. Unfortunately, they raise the price of the the inexpensive rings to match the better ones. Some of these rings show up in the EE optics and budget optics forum for good prices, but you have to be willing to wait for them. ETA: Another inexpensive option is the CAA DVSR one-piece ring, which is $26 shipped: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=142&t=551642 These are decent, solid mounts, but the included inserts don't always hold well with 1" scopes, and better inserts like the ones above help. I've got one with a 30mm DMS-1 mounted that works very well. Note that the height listed by CAA and most of their vendors is incorrect - they call it 1.82", but that's to the bottom of the mount, not to the rail. It's actually 1.67" high for 1" scopes). http://www.maxicon.com/guns/optics/one_piece/ar15_onepiece_mounts.htm#caa |
