Got a new TA31F sitting on a fairly new S&W AR15. I took it to the range today for the first time. I could not get anything on paper at 100 yards. I had 2 12"x12" targets stacked on top of each other, effectively making a 12" wide x 24" tall target. I literally shot through almost 2 magazines and hit the target about 4 times.
I don't suck, but I'm also no competition shooter. Prior to this rifle, today I also sighted in a RRA AR with iron sights and an Aimpoint M4 at 100 yards with no problems. I got about 3-4" groups at 100 yards from the bench using Privi M193. The S&W only had about 100 rounds through it when I bought it from my brother. I was there the day he first sighted it in with the factory irons. We got it sighted in no problems at 25 yards (just initial sighting with the intention of doing 50 or 100 next time we went to the range). Since then, we installed a YHM FF rail with low profile gas block. It has a 16" barrel. I bought it from him, slapped on the TA31F (NIB, using the flat top mount that came with it) and went to the range. I expected to be a little close to where I was aiming. Nothing. I was aiming all over the place trying to see where I was hitting. The previous outing with the rifle leads me to believe it can get decent groups. I feel like something is wrong. Based on the ACOG manual, it seems like the POI should be pretty close out of the box. I was aiming off the paper in all directions trying to find POI. I never found it. There is no way I can adjust the scope enough to bring it to center. Either something is off with the ACOG/mount, or something is off with the rifle (out of spec upper, barrel??). Has anyone else had this experience before? I guess next time I need to start closer and at least see which direction the POI is off. I read somewhere that there are shims for the ACOG to get close to center. Seems like that is a band-aid for something that is wrong. Any help is appreciated. |

I had the same thing happen with two of my four ACOGs. I don't know why people think their new ACOG should print close to POA out of the box. I learned very early to buy a $20 laser bore sighter. With the laser device stuck in the end of your bbl. you can adjust POI in your house close enough to print on paper at 100 yards within the first few shots.

What was your experience with adjusting the ACOG? With it being that far off the paper, did you have enough adjustment available to center it?
My reason for thinking it should be close is the wording in the manual, although I now admit I misread it. It states on page 9: "The ACOG is shipped in a centered position for M16/AR15 carrying handles. Normally this means that only small adjustments are necessary. DO NOT adjust the riflescope to the extremes." I have it mounted on a flat top, so I initially overlooked the part about the carrying handle. I'm still worried that as far off as I was, I won't have enough adjustment available. |

Decrease your sight in distance to however short it needs to be to get on paper; without that info, you might be pissing into a gale. It sounds like you know what to do from there. That is what I was gonna say. Move in and get it on paper. Lots of guys have the acogs on flattops. |

Start at 25 yards.....get on target....then go to zero at 50 yards....all of my ACOG's, Aimpoints are zero at 50 yards.....then I see where I am at 100 yards....
Keep it simple.....I can usually get on target at 25 yards and zero at 50 yards with less than 10 rounds.... Good thing about having all .223's, all 16" barrels, all CAR length....there is very little variation in shot placement.... 77Bronc |

My TA31RCO-M4CP ACOG was only 5 clicks or so to the right, brand new out of the box.
If you're shooting that wide, but get it on paper "once in a while", it sounds like your mount/screws are not secure. As said, it doesn't take much to throw your POI all over hell. |
| First zero at 25 meters. Use the 300 meter stadia line, get point of aim point of impact, but it is imprative you use the 300 meter stadia line. You should fire a 5 shot group into an area less than 1". Then, move appropriate size target to 100 meters, and zero using the 100 meter mark (center) for final adjustments. At this point, the bigest factor is YOUR ability to apply the principles of marksmanship to FIRE A GROUP. |
