As we say every time someone poses this question, it depends on the application and your pocketbook.

I have an Aimpoint 9000sc mounted on my patrol carbine. Midway had them on sale a while back for 250. If you can afford an Aimpoint, get one and you will not be disappointed. They have several models, some of which are compatible with night vision.

Another option is the Holosight, these have been around for many years and are very serviceable, but like their better quality, more expensive brethren the Eotech, they eat batteries.

Those are the three main ones I would recommend for a serious business rifle.

For a range/fun rifle take a look at the Vortex, Burris XTS135 and Tasco series.

The Burris is a very well made sight but has a reputation for the dot being too bright for low light applications.

There are also Sightron, Mueller, OKO and several other sights that are pretty good.

thanks for the info:   do they have a scope that you can adjust the intensity of the red dot?   What about the red dot scopes at cabellas for around 50-100 $....junk?

I use a ATN ultra sight. It works pretty good, its no aimpoint but its good for a budget. 2,000 rounds of .223 and about 5k of .22lr and it hasn't lost zero at all or had other problems.
