I seem to have more questions than answers.  About 2 weeks ago I was thinking of just getting a hunting scope.  But I started what-iffing myself and want to consider a red dot as well.  I am thinking entry-level here as my college student budget is somewhat limited.  That pretty much leaves ACOGs out as they cost just about as much as my rifle.  So would you rather have an Aimpoint or EOtech and why?

I chose the EoTech only because of the available 1 mil dot.  I think the Aimpoint was 3 mil. Probably not a very good reason, but I was looking for the best accuracy for casual shooting, and not for professional or tactical reasons.  It was a good choice a few years ago, and know being a little smarter than I was then, I would do it again.

I have two aimpoints and could not see any reason (for my purposes) to buy an eotech.  Battery life is a big consideration IMHO, and aimpoint is the stand alone victor there.  If you have the funds now, i'd see if the 30% off ebay thing thru microsoft live is still around and pick up a micro-T.  5+ year battery life, negligible size and weight, NV compatible if you are into that.  From what I have read the eotech's battery life is not it's strong point.  YMMV

+1 for Aimpoint. I love my CompM3

Have 2 M4s Aimpoints and love them. I have owned the Eotech 512 and the 553 but went back to the Aimpoint. I like the single dot of the Aimpoint better.

I liked everything better about the EoTech except battery life and there is talk of voltage leaks killing the battery even if the sight is turned off.

Got an Aimpoint Comp ML3

It's nice

next will be an AGOG probably TA01NSN

The aimpoint micro looks a bit too expensive as for what I can afford.  What are the entry-level aimpoints and EOTechs?

Eotech 512 for $360. 516 (uses CR123's) for $400. 516 actually is a bit taller so it will automatically 1/3rd CO-witness with your BUIS.

You can get a ML2 for about $350 new and the ML3 for $400 new. If you want the night vision capability add about $50 to each price on the Aimpoints. You will need a mount for the Aimpoint. I got a rock solid 30mm ring for 30 bucks (Different heights available depending if you want absolute co-witness of 1/3rd) . Of course you could go with a Larue QD.

Aimpoint Comp ML3 battery life 50,000 hrs
2 moa dot
armored rubber cover

I got mine brand new with the aimpoint mount and cowitness spacer for $335 shipped. It was a closeout deal

Look into the live.com ebay thing, basically 30% rebate on anything that is buy it now.

you have to jump through a few hoops but its worth it

I like the sight picture of the EOTech.  It'w wide open, almost no obstruction of your vision and you get a 1 MOA dot with the big ring to make it easy to find.  It is just so easy to shoot accurately and fast.

Eo tech is faster.
aimpoint wins battery life , and is less likely to fail

Just curious.. did you try the Search function?  There's a slight possibility that we've already had this thread.

Yes, I did try a search and it did not come up with anything.  Plus, we all need an excuse to discuss some of the finer points of life.

Best thing to do is to compare them both side by side and go shoot with both of them.  This will be the deciding factor if you're torn.

Recommend the Aimpoint T-1 or M4.  The comments that the Eotechs are faster or more precise have always made me chuckle.  In the end, like most all things, it's personal preference whichever you decide to get.  Both kits are in our .mil supply system.  I have only had limited experience with a Eotech on a HK 10.5" piston rig (AD not contractor) last time I was forward.

Can both the Aimpoints and the EOTechs be used with magnifying scopes?  I don't want a magnifying redot site, but I'd like to add a scope later.  Is this feasible with both companies' products?

An excellent non-military Aimpoint sight is the CompC3.

??Are you asking if you can get a magnifier for the Eotech or Aimpoint? Or do you want to get a regular Scope and then mount the Eotech or Aimpoint with it?

Yeah, that.

aimpoints have better battery life, but IMO the eotech has a better reticle.  the large diameter circle helps you get on target faster and the small dot is better for accuracy.

I have one of each.  i have my EOTech 512 on my 16" M4 and my aimpoint compm3 on my SBR/SHTF rifle because i know it will always work.

Yeah, that.

I suppose you could rig up some configuration like that but there would sure be a lot of things on you gun.

What are the differences between an Aimpoint CompC3 and a Micro T-1?  I know that the Micro is smaller and lighter.  But is there anything else?  Also, I read that I will need to purchase an extra mounting base for my AR for the CompC3 to raise it high enough above my front sight post.  Does the Micro also need an additional mounting base?  If the Micro dosen't, then it will bring the price of both optics within approximately $100 of eachother.
