Looking for something small (tactical size) at least a 4x or variable, maximum 32mm,  and under $500.  Going on a flat top carbine .223 to be used for plinking or hunting out to 200 yards mostly and occasionally longer just for fun.  So many brands out there but everything I look at is cheap $100 or $800+.  Wanting to find something in between.

IOR Valdada makes a decent illuminated x4 scope for at or under 500 called the 4x24mm M2.  Its lens are great but the bullet drop reticle that is "calibrated" for 62gr 5.56 NATO is often hard to match ammo with to get the full benefits of the scope.  It will hold zero though and the adjustment turrets are pretty nice.

The lens on it are equal too Ziess scopes to give you an idea of how clear the optics are.

See, you add a lit reticle to the requirements, and that's where they get you
for an additional $150 to $200.... now you're talking about a $6-700 proposition, with a good mount.

A good mount is a neccesity.

To stay under $800, The holy grail in my book would be a Larue SPR-E
with a Trijicon Accupoint TR21

From there, maybe a lower cost option would be a Bushnell Elite4200
1.25-4x to hit the just over $600 pricepoint with a Larue SPR mountwww.swfa.com/pc-13201-185-bushnell-125-4x24-elite-4200-rifle-scope.aspx. T

Then, there is the Bushnell Elite 3200 1-4x With the illuminated Fireflu reticle.
That and a SPR-E mount would be about $450.00

Other than that, there are a couple of lower end lit 1-4x scopes that have mixed reviews. The Millet DMS-1, and the

Burris short mag 3-9 is pretty nice, great eye relief but the exit pupil is kind of small.

I've thought about just going ahead and getting an ACOG but everyone I like comes with the red chevron rectical.  What would be better about this than a crosshair one?

With crosshairs (especially when illuminated), your target is covered by the crosshairs, especially at long distances.  With the chevron, you can situate your target on the tip of the chevron, maintaining visibility.  That's what I personally like about it.  Plus, it's fun.

I dislike crosshairs greatly.

Just ordered one of these for a "budget build" optic. Burris Fullfield tac30. 30mm tube, 3-9x40, ballistic plex reticle, TAC-2 knobs, decent glass, fairly reputalbe company. Can be found for under $300 at most online retailers.
