Ok so I'm building my ultimate home defense AR, 16 middy flat-top and want an optic. I've tried an AR w/an eotech and like how fast the reticle is, never tried an acog, aimpoint, etc.. I've seen the reticle pics of the others but with the bigger 65 moa the eotech seems unbeatable in the speed dept. I'll have buis also.

My question is for Eotech owners, between the 512 and the 552 w/nv capability is the only difference in reticle brightness adjustment the "NV" button on the 552? I've compared the specs off eotech's site and their identical, they even messed up and state the 512 has "10 settings for NV use"! So the extra $100 for the 552 is just to
turn down the reticle brightness in 1 push? The 552 can be submerged deeper also.
But thats it, no other differences or capabilities the 552 has that the 512 does not?

You have it right.  I have a 512 and picked it based on easy battery find, don't deep N/V capability or the ability to go deeper than 10 feet.

I also just put a 512 on my rifle after a year long Aimpoint/Eotech decision.  I finally decided I would save my extra money and not get the night vision compatable 552.  Instead I bought a LaRue mount for my 512!  Man I love both the Eo and the LaRue mount!

I've had a 512 f for a while now, no complaints.
Also look into the 557.AR223 Model.

i've herd that the 516 is good as well.  its a CR123 battery version. basically the 553 with no NV.

Just a little note.  I tried to tell my buddy to get the 512 with LaRue mount.  He got one of the models with the adjustment buttons on the side instead of the the back.  His is taller than mine and you cannot see his BUIS with his on a LaRue mount.  Mine is a lower 1/3 cowitness.  I think it uses the cr123.  I dont know if all side adjustment Eos are that way or just the one with 123s.  Needless to say I'm happy with mine and he should have listened. In regards to the 557 IMO it has too much crap in the recticle;  besides the different points of impact are for a (I think) 62 grain bullet.JMHO

Thanks for the info guys, I'm leaning towards the 512, the 557 is great for what it does but I don't need that much range for home defense. I still need to figure out what kind of co-witness of the sights I want to do. I'm getting a cmmg 16 LW upper 1/7 twist that has the standard A2 front sight. I've got the troy fold down rear sight already, probably another couple wks to get the upper. I could get a fold down front sight later if the standard front gets in the way. As I learn about the AR platform its amazing how many ways to spend insane amounts of money
