Ok so I'm building my ultimate home defense AR, 16 middy flat-top and want an optic. I've tried an AR w/an eotech and like how fast the reticle is, never tried an acog, aimpoint, etc.. I've seen the reticle pics of the others but with the bigger 65 moa the eotech seems unbeatable in the speed dept. I'll have buis also. My question is for Eotech owners, between the 512 and the 552 w/nv capability is the only difference in reticle brightness adjustment the "NV" button on the 552? I've compared the specs off eotech's site and their identical, they even messed up and state the 512 has "10 settings for NV use"! So the extra $100 for the 552 is just to turn down the reticle brightness in 1 push? The 552 can be submerged deeper also. But thats it, no other differences or capabilities the 552 has that the 512 does not? www.eotech-inc.com/products.php?id=1 Blackops_1. 512.A65/1 specs same as 552.a65/1 just no nv Optics: Transmission holography - 100% parallax free Magnification: 1x Eye Relief: Unlimited Length/Width/Height: 5"x1.8"x2.25" (131x49x60 mm) Weight: 11.5 oz (326 grams) Temperature: -40 to 150 F (using AA lithiums); -20 to 140 F (all other battery choices) Waterproof: Submersible to 10 ft depth Sealing: Fogproof internal optics Color/Finish: Non reflective black with hard coat finish Adjustment (per click): 0.5 MOA (1/2" at 100 yds) Adjustment Range: +/- 40 MOA travel Mount: 1" Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913) rail Return to Zero: Repeatable to 1 MOA after re-mounting Heads-Up-Display Window Optical Surfaces: Anti-glare coating Window Dimensions: 1.20" x 0.85" (30 x 23mm) Front Window Material: 1/8" solid glass Rear Window Material: Shatter resistant laminate (3/16" thick) Field of View (100 yds): 30 yds (28m) at a 4" eye relief Standard Reticle: 65MOA circle with quadrant ticks with 1 MOA aiming dot Electrical Brightness Adjustment Range: 110,000:1 brightest to lowest No Night Vision Compatibility Power Source: 2x 1.5V AA batteries (supports lithium, alkaline, or rechargeable) Battery Life: 1,000 continuous hours (lithium) at nominal setting 12; 600 continuous with AA alkaline Brightness Settings: 30 settings with scrolling feature (10 settings for NV use) Auto Battery Check Indicator: Flashing reticle upon start-up Auto Shut-down: At 8 hrs- programmable to 4 hrs 552.a65/1 works w/gen 1 nv,aa bat, picatinny rail Optics: Transmission holography - 100% parallax free Magnification: 1x Eye Relief: Unlimited Length/Width/Height: 5"x1.8"x2.25" (131x49x60 mm) Weight: 11.5 oz (326 grams) Temperature: -40 to 150 F (using AA lithiums); -20 to 140 F (all other battery choices) Waterproof: Submersible to 33 ft depth Sealing: Fogproof internal optics Color/Finish: Non reflective black with hard coat finish Adjustment (per click): 0.5 MOA (1/2" at 100 yds) Adjustment Range: +/- 40 MOA travel Mount: 1" Picatinny (MIL-STD-1913) rail Return to Zero: Repeatable to 1 MOA after re-mounting Heads-Up-Display Window Optical Surfaces: Anti-glare coating Window Dimensions: 1.20" x 0.85" (30 x 23mm) Front Window Material: 1/8" solid glass Rear Window Material: Shatter resistant laminate (3/16" thick) Field of View (100 yds): 30 yds (28m) at a 4" eye relief Standard Reticle: 65MOA circle with quadrant ticks with 1 MOA aiming dot Electrical Brightness Adjustment Range: 110,000:1 brightest to lowest Night Vision Brightness Range: 1000:1 with NV switch engaged Power Source: 2x 1.5V AA batteries (supports lithium, alkaline, or rechargeable) Battery Life: 1,000 continuous hours (lithium) at nominal setting 12; 600 continuous with AA alkaline Brightness Settings: 30 settings with scrolling feature (10 settings for NV use) Auto Battery Check Indicator: Flashing reticle upon start-up Auto Shut-down: At 8 hrs- programmable to 4 hrs |
| Just a little note. I tried to tell my buddy to get the 512 with LaRue mount. He got one of the models with the adjustment buttons on the side instead of the the back. His is taller than mine and you cannot see his BUIS with his on a LaRue mount. Mine is a lower 1/3 cowitness. I think it uses the cr123. I dont know if all side adjustment Eos are that way or just the one with 123s. Needless to say I'm happy with mine and he should have listened. In regards to the 557 IMO it has too much crap in the recticle; besides the different points of impact are for a (I think) 62 grain bullet.JMHO |

Thanks for the info guys, I'm leaning towards the 512, the 557 is great for what it does but I don't need that much range for home defense. I still need to figure out what kind of co-witness of the sights I want to do. I'm getting a cmmg 16 LW upper 1/7 twist that has the standard A2 front sight. I've got the troy fold down rear sight already, probably another couple wks to get the upper. I could get a fold down front sight later if the standard front gets in the way. As I learn about the AR platform its amazing how many ways to spend insane amounts of money Blackops_1. |
