I have a friend in the marines who uses an ACOG....he tells me the accuracy is not sufficient and when you bump the scope around it gets its zero messed up without much abuse....wondering if anyone on here has had different experience because I am looking to buy a scope for my SHTF rifle and want something I can count on..... THe PROBLEM IS LOSS OF ZERO....perhaps his scope is not mounted properly as i can see how that would cause problems.... Not sure what kind of ACOG he is a vehicle commander in the marines so whatever they use standard probably... What other types of scopes/dots dont need their battery replaced and can stand the test of time? I dont want a 'sniper scope' type deal with just solid crosshairs Thanks |

I assume he is using an issued TA31RCO, correct? Is the scope losing its internal zero (i.e. the scope's actual windage & elevation adjustments won't hold) or is it a problem with the scope mount not being tightened &/or loctited well enough, and it shifting on the rail? As for the accuracy not being sufficient, well that would be a direct result of the scope losing its zero, so it all comes back to my first question. +1 on ACOG reliability. There's always the possibility that he might have just gotten a bad ACOG. Somehow broken, or maybe even defective. Trijicon is a fantastic company, but they're now, like any other company, immune from having a lemon every once in a rare while. This may be it. However, through thousands of ACOGs in use, in the civilian, military, and para-military/LEO sectors, I think you can rely on them to be pretty sturdy. I've heard very few functional complaints about them. People have disliked the eye relief, disliked the price, or the BAC, had concerns about the tritium half life, but it's usually undisputed that it's a good piece of glass. They may not like it, but it doesn't change the fact that it's an excellent scope, and if it works for you, it's a fantastic combat optic. I own three, and have carried two of them overseas. They're made of the same machined aircraft aluminium as the rifle, and I remain confident that my ACOGs will survive just about anything that the rifle will survive. ~Augee |

I was watching Shooting USA where they toured Trijicon and then showed a class where a SWAT dept was issued TA31ECOS. When zeroing, the instructor told all of the students to give the ACOG a good whack after making adjustments. He said hitting it hard from the top lets the prism settle in with the new adjustments, and if you didn't do so, it would adjust from the recoil of your shots. This may be what your friend is experiencing -- maybe he didn't seat the adjustments well, and he's getting the adjustments in the middle of a fight. |

My TA31DOC was losing its zero, this ACOG is the fourth of fifth ACOG I've owned, never had it happen before. I thought it was the mount (ARMS 19S), it was replaced with a LaRue mount, but the problem continued. I would zero it and for the day it'd be fine, then the next time at the range the zero would be all messed up. I finally paid attention to the elevation adjustment. The adjustment is normally well recessed inside the its housing, mine was sticking out, enough to rub against the cap. I screwed it back in so it's recessed like the windage adjustment, haven't had a problem since, still can't figure out why it got loosened so much. |
Yes, we heard you the first time... there is no need to shout.  But guess what... unless you can provide more detail, there is no way to know if the scope is losing zero because it is mechanically defective or because it's not mounted securely. ACOG's have a proven track record my friend. They "stand the test of time" as you put it, so to write them off because of some sketchy information is stupid IMO. And as for options apart from ACOGs', you should poke around in the optics forum. You know... the forum this questions should have been posted in from the get go. You will find numerous information threads tacked to the top of the page. Hope this helps, and please spare us the shouting next time, OK?

Yes, I have had ZERO problems with loss of ZERO! Nor have I heard of anyone else who used ACOGs for their job having an issue with loss of zero. Are you sure your "friend" is a Marine???? Or does he just play one on the internet? |
