Hope this is the right section in which to post this . . . ! Anyway, my wife is left-eye-dominant - yet, she's right handed. We've gotten her "squared away" with pistol-shooting. But, alas, our AR's are a different matter! Perhaps I should tell you about her designated weapon, and (hopefully), one of you can provide the answer(s). Okay, it's a an A2 carbine w/permanent carry-handle. I've mounted an EOTech cantilever co-witness mount and put a basic red-dot set up on it. (The EOTech co-witness mount screws onto the carry-handle, then, sits out, over the upper hand guard a bit. The idea being, it'll line up with the irons sights - co-witnessing with an EOTech/Bushnell holographic sight.) [So the question is out of the way, I'll say right now that the current sight DOES NOT co-witness. That's not particularly important/relevant, I don't think. The PROBLEM is sighting, in general.] My wife is NOT a big girl. She's only 5' 3". So, handling an AR is a chore for her, as it is. (No. There's no other option, at this point - not unless she's going to protect our household with a 10-22.) Anyway . . . I've got the collapsible stock GTG - and a folding vertical fore-grip (which she likes to use folded against the lower hand-guard), and with a 20 rd mag, it's as light-weight as it's going to get. That aside, the biggest issue is sighting, as I said. Now . . . would it be best (and/or simplest), to just have her try to shoot left-handed? She prefers to hold her pistol with her RIGHT HAND. So, switching up for the rifle may not come so easily, nor feel so natural. Plus, her hands aren't very strong. So, squeezing the trigger smoothly could be problematic. (Exercises for her hand, perhaps: to strengthen her grip? Hmmm . . ! She absolutely HATES to exercise! )Isn't there a sight-mount that "hangs" off to the LHS of a carry-handle? If so, would THAT be a way to go? (After I spent gawd-knows how much on the OTHER mount! $75, minimum! Ugh! At least, I have it - should I ever need to mount my EOTech on that particular carbine . . . I GUESS! :-( ) Needless to say, sighting the irons will be impossible unless she shoots left-handed. And, since the BSA red-dot is really a crap, maybe that's the route we should go, after all. (Exasperated sigh!) ![]() Anybody . . ? THX |

It depends on the shooter. How strong is her dominance? Have her try both side and see what she does better at: her eye dominance may be stronger than her hand dominance. I'm right eye dominate but I can shoot off either side. I've gotten a lot better with my right eye since I've been practicing, but the whole eye/hand dominance thing is very individualistic. BSW |
good post! about 4 in 10 people are left eye dominant. About 1 in 10 are also left handed. It’s not a big deal at all. I would buy her a flat top and folding rear sight BUIS. Teach her to shoot “to the dot” and keep both eyes open. When she shoots right handed her left eye will see only the target and her right eye will see both the target, the dot and the front sight post. Once her brain learns to pay attention to the red dot only her right eye can see she is home free. Don’t switch her up on right hand left hand stuff. It will be easier to train her to pull the trigger with only her right hand and load mags only with her left than trying to teach her to shoot pistols right handed and rifles left handed. |
