Must be reliable and durable.
Mil Dot Reticle.
2.5-8 power

I've been planning on buying a Leupold, but don't want to come off the cash.
What are some of the next best things?

Thanks.

3-9 or 3-10 or 2.5-10 would be a lot easier to get

Bushnell 4200, Nikon Monarch both offer scopes that are as good as glass as Leupold VXIIIs for less money

The Leupold MarkII 3-9x40mm Might be an option.

I was pretty set on the ITMR reticle, so the MR/T was the option for me.

If externally adjusted turrets aren't an issue, and you're okay with a hunting/holdoff style reticle, the B&C line from Leupold (2-7x36mm) is also an affordable option, but probably now that you're after, especially if you want mil-dot.

If a much larger optic is acceptable - I have the Millett TRS-1 on my SPR, it's a good optic, but too big, thus I'm replacing it with the MR/T now

Try the Leupy Mark 2 3-9x40.  It is a sweet scope.  I have one.
It comes in plex and mil-dot reticles

FWIW it will be going on a .308.
3-9 would be fine, but it has to to be a Mil Dot reticle.

Thanks for the help.

Buckmaster is the way to go.
I like my Bushnell 3200 Elite fixed 10X.  Very nice glass at an awesome price (~$180)
I had a Sightron SI 3-9 (~120) on my 30-06 and it's holding up well.  I got the Bushnell to replace it and put the Sightron on my .22.
