I want to mount a medium to high powered scope on an upper that will be used for target and prairie dogs only (no buis). Scope will be 3-9 or 4-14ish 1" tube, probably 30mm bell. I haven't mounted a scope to an AR in awhile, and I always forget: am I supposed to buy the high rings, or the extra high? (It seems like extra high to me). I've been happy with my Warne QDs. I have no real need for QD on this rifle, but is there a reason not to go with the same thing? Also, what is the current thinking re: the Armalite or Wilson Combat 1 piece mounts? Maybe more weight than it's worth? Thanks! I've got to order quick, the prairie dogs are mocking me! |
| Iron sights for an AR are 1.4" above the rail. Ultra high, super high, or whatever the particular manufacturer calls his product will put the scope centerline at 1.4" above the rail--same as the irons. If you want to duplicate the cheek weld, etc. of the irons, then take a look at the ultra high (or whatever) to give you the same geometry. Eye relief is also an issue, and that's sometimes an issue with individual rings. My Leopold 3-9 and ultra high individual rings are just fine. |

Forgot to mention that some mount manufacturers spec their product from the top of the rail, to the bottom of the scope outside diameter, so you have to add in half of the scope tube diameter to get the true height of the centerline above the rail. I think Burris does this. Others, like Leupold spec their rings from the top of the rail to the center line of the mount so there's no arithmetic involved. If you're looking for a specific dimension, just make sure you're getting what you want. |
