Hey guys I was looking at getting a ACOG (TA33) and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on the different color reticles.  I have a red aimpoint now so I am leaning toward the Amber.  Let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance

ETA: I have looked at both inside a store but I have not shot with either.  I am leaning toward the Amber but I am just trying to get opinions from people who have actually used them in the field.

Everybody has an opinion.  You should look through both and form your own.

I prefer red because it contrasts better most backgrounds.  Others prefer the amber because it is a little brighter.  There's a few guys around here who prefer amber because they are color blind and red doesn't get the job done.

I have used both in the field.  The amber washes out in some tan/light brown backgrounds.  In ideal sunlight conditions the amber works fine.

The red seems to give a better contrast.

That said I have not had any issues with the amber.  All my shooting with both has been outside.

When the amber washes out, can you still see the chevron?  Does it look black?

I haven't used it in an ACOG but I've used an amber Reflex II.  It washed out sometimes in bright daylight against a light colored background.  Specifically, I was trying it out against different objects and almost lost it completely against a patch of exposed limestone which was almost white.  I could still see the reticle but it was difficult to find and not quick.

I don't know if a red reticle would have the same problem or not.

I have a TA47-4 Amber crosshair, and I prefer it to the TR-21R Red triangle I used to own. If/when the reticle washes out, there is still a black crosshair on my unit.

I like red... used both and it stands out better to me.

What he said.

I find that *for what I do* that red stands out against the background better, and my eye picks it up faster.

As always, YMMV.

My experience is that red works better against most backgrounds.  Certainly that's true down here in AZ where everything is brown, although over in GA, it might be different.

I'm screwed.  The ECOS that I'm waiting on has an amber reticle, and the hog hunting that I do is usually in wheat fields!  I'm going to try it anyway...

ETA:  Take that back, now that I check the Trijicon site it shows to have a red day and night reticle  -  but a website spec sheet elsewhere showed black/amber.  It's going to be current production, whatever that is.

Seems like the general consensus is that Red is best . . . unless you like amber.

There are two current production ECOS, the TA01 and the TA31.  If you're getting the TA01 then it doesn't matter because during the day it is always a black crosshair.   If you're getting the TA31 then it has a red crosshair according to the trijicon website.
